Two games are on the slate to start the 2020-21 NBA campaign with the first contest featuring the Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn Nets.
The opening game of the season offers intrigue as Kevin Durant makes his return to regular-season action and does so against the team he won two championships and two NBA Finals MVP trophies with.
Last season, the squads played just once due to the pandemic with the Nets blowing out the Warriors 128-88. Yet Golden State holds the all-time record 54-37.
Golden State Warriors
After five consecutive trips to the NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors spent last season mired amongst the lottery clubs.
This set up the Warriors with the second pick in the draft which Golden State used to select James Wiseman.
Unfortunately, the same day as the draft, Klay Thompson who was ready to make his return suffered another season-ending injury tearing his Achilles tendon.
Whether the Dubs had other offseason plans is unknown but with Thompson’s injury Bob Myers went out and added Kelly Oubre, Kent Bazemore, and Brad Wanamaker to bolster the team’s depth.
For their season opener, the Warriors may be without a few key players as James Wiseman is going through COVID-19 contact tracing protocol while Draymond Green is addressing a mild foot sprain.
Wiseman is probable while Green is doubtful and as noted Thompson will be out for another full season.
Brooklyn Nets
Much is expected of the Brooklyn Nets now that Durant and Kyrie Irving are on the squad. This offseason GM Sean Marks shook things up by hiring first-time head coach Steve Nash.
The former Phoenix Suns point guard promptly brought in several former Phoenix Suns teammates like Amare Stoudemire as well as his old head coach Mike D’Antoni to be an assistant.
As the team begins their season with arguably the deepest club in the league and definitely in the East there is presumption James Harden could also be headed to the Nets.
If not, players like Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie, Joe Harris, and Jarrett Allen will work with KD and Irving to no doubt serve up a tantalizing offense – – but where will the defense come from?
Youngster Nicolas Claxton is suffering from tendinopathy in his right knee which wil hold him out for an undetermined period.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Under is 41-19 in the Warriors last 60 Tue. games.
- Over is 6-2 in the Nets last 8 games following a ATS win.
- Under is 8-3 in the Nets last 11 games as a favorite.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
The Dubs will miss Thompson’s 3-pointers but the true loss may be felt in other areas of the court. His defense is arguably the best of the Warriors and his constant motion and screen setting were used to get Curry wide-open looks.
Brooklyn can put points on the board via several different lineups and players but implementing a defensive scheme will be critical to taking the top seed.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Warriors plus 7.0
Can the combination of Oubre, Wiggins, and Bazemore make up for Thompson? And, who on the Nets will take the lead defensively?
The answer to those questions will likely determine the winner of the match.
With the season so fresh it’s likely offense wins out, however, and that means Durant strikes the first blow against his former club, but seven points is a bit of a stretch so take the Dubs and the points.
