Wednesday, December 21st, the Detroit Pistons and Philadelphia 76ers will play the first of three scheduled contests. The teams will play a home-and-home series on January 8th and 10th with Detroit hosting the first game and Philly the second.
The Pistons are completing a back-to-back set having lost 111-126 to the Jazz on Tuesday while the 76ers beat the Raptors 104-101 in overtime on Monday.

While there hasn’t been much to celebrate for Pistons fans they are witnessing their youth (sans Cade Cunningham) develop. In the loss to the Jazz, Jaden Ivey scored a season-high 30 points while Jalen Duren delivered a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Detroit’s statistical performances aren’t looking great on either side of the hardwood. They allow opponents to score an average of 118.2 points per game which ranks second worst at 29th.
Their opponent’s field goal percentage is 48.6% ranking 27th while their best defensive stat in the key categories is the opponent three-point percentage as foes shoot 35.7% from deep which ranks 15th overall.
Offensively, the Pistons score 111.3 points per game which ranks 19th. From an efficiency perspective, the Pistons shoot the fourth worst of the 30 teams (27th) with 44.9% from the field and rank 18th from the perimeter shooting 34.7%.
Isaiah Livers (shoulder) is out while Cade Cunningham (shin) had surgery and was shut down for the season.
Philadelphia 76ers
Embiid is averaging 33.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.6 blocks, and is shooting 50 percent from deep. He’s shooting 53.5% from the field on 20.7 attempts, 33.8% from the perimeter on 3.3 attempts, and 84.9% from the stripe on 11.9 attempts per game.
The Sixers have moved up to fifth and are on a five-game win streak.
This season, the 76ers score an average of 111.2 points per game ranking 20th. Philly shoots 47.4% from the field and 38.5% from the perimeter, ranking 13th and third respectively.
Defense is where the 76ers make their mark allowing the third-fewest opponent points per game with 107.9 and the best perimeter defense at 32.7% while ranking eighth for opponent field goal percentage allowing opponents to shoot 46.2%.
Furkan Korkmaz (illness) is questionable. Tyrese Maxey (foot) is out indefinitely. JJulian Champagnie, Saben Lee, and Jaden Springer are on assignment with the G League.

Although trap games happen, of all the young tanking teams the Pistons haven’t seemed invested in competing and pulling off a winning streak. Albeit, that can shift at any given point in the season as the Magic are demonstrating.
Still, Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris, and James Harden have found a groove so they should collect the easy win. One caution is during the Monday match versus the Raptors there were times it was obvious Embiid wasn’t giving 100 percent.
They won the game but needed overtime so it was a reminder any team can come back and win. Assuming Doc covered that in the film review and combining that with the fact Detroit is playing a back-to-back has me taking the Sixers to cover.
