Wednesday, December 23rd finds the Detroit Pistons vs. Minnesota Timberwolves playing their first game of the 2020-21 season.
Neither club participated in the Disney bubble in Orlando so this will be both team’s first match with implications counting toward the win-loss column in over nine months.
The Pistons hold the all-time record between the clubs with 31 wins in 60 meetings. Last season, the clubs played once due to the pandemic with the Timberwolves taking the lone meeting.

Troy Weaver began his tenure as the Pistons’ new GM with a great draft landing Killian Hayes and Isaiah Stewart. But then he shifted gears in free agency with some head-scratching moves.
Although the Jerami Grant signing was a great addition given his prowess in the playoffs it’s odd Weaver seemingly let Christian Wood leave without effort to retain him or do a sign and trade.
Since Wood signed for almost $20 million less over the same term as Grant it begs the question of whether there is bad blood between Wood and Detroit or the Pistons know something no one else does about Wood.
Mason Plumlee and Jahlil Okafor were part of Weaver’s big man signing spree while he also made a few smart additions via an economical deal for Delon Wright who’ll serve as a young mentor to Hayes. Plus if Zhaire Smith can live up to his predraft hype and stay healthy he might also pay dividends.
Deividas Sirvydis won’t be in the lineup Wednesday as he navigates the COVID-19 protocols.
Minnesota Timberwolves
With the top draft pick the Wolves elected to bring in the best of the top three talents to fit their system selecting Anthony Edwards.
GM Gersson Rosas needed to add defense and accomplished that with the signings of Ed Davis and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. He also brought back fan-favorite Ricky Rubio who also has a great relationship with Karl-Anthony Towns.
The team retained Malik Beasley but might be wondering if that was a wise move given all his off court issues. To wit, he may not be available for the season opener while his court issues loom.
