Saturday, January 16th finds the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat playing in their first meeting of the 2020-21 campaign.
Last season the clubs played only once due to the pandemic with the Heat winning 117-108 on November 12th, 2019. The Heat holds the all-time record with 60 wins in 114 matches.
Detroit Pistons
Through 11 games this season the Pistons rest at the bottom of the ladder with the worst record in the association.
Troy Weaver told the press the Pistons were entering a rebuild and were essentially tanking but most of their games have been within 10 points and they’ve played two overtime matches already splitting those decisions.
The two victories the Pistons do have occurred on their home court against top teams (Phoenix and Celtics). That means Detroit can’t be counted out especially with so much uncertainty regarding who’ll play for the Heat.
Detroit was scheduled to play a back-to-back set but the Wizards had six players test positive for COVID-19 which led to the Friday match being postponed.
Their prior game was a loss to the Bucks in which Jerami Grant led the way with 22 points. He was joined by four others including Svi Mykhailiuk (18), Blake Griffin (12), Josh Jackson (11) and Saddiq Bey (10) were the other double-figure contributor.
Derrick Rose missed the game versus the Bucks with knee soreness and is questionable for Saturday. Killian Hayes has a labral tear in his hip which will keep him out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
Presumably, the Heat have enough players available but aren’t tipping their hand. That said there are 11 players listed on their injured reserve list. Nine of those players are listed as questionable.
The timing of the Heat dealing with this isn’t great as they’ve struggled to start the season and players who had to quarantine included both of their superstars.
Making matters worse is Tyler Herro had to leave the last game (a loss to the 76ers) with back spasms but scored 17 points prior to his exit.
Duncan Robinson led the scoring for the Heat with 22 points. Seven of the eight players who dressed reached double-figure scoring.
That included Gabe Vincent (21), Chris Silva (17), Kelly Olynyk (12), Max Struss (11), and Precious Achiuwa (10).
Eight Heat players have missed games addressing COVID-19 health and safety protocols including Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Goran Dragic, Avery Bradley, Kendrick Nunn, Mo Harkless, Udonis Haslem, and KZ Okpala.
Six of these eight are listed as questionable for Saturday’s match with Butler and Bradley ruled out. Herro (back), Meyers Leonard (shoulder), and Gabe Vincent (knee soreness) are also listed as questionable.
