On Friday, December 9th, the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies play for the second time in this campaign. Memphis won the December 4th match 122-112.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with Detroit losing 98-104 to the Pelicans while the Grizzlies trounced the Thunder 123-102.
Last season, the teams played twice with Memphis winning both contests. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 28 of their 53 matches.
Detroit Pistons
While the Pistons have just seven wins on the season it’s right where they want to be. There were many analysts who thought Detroit would be the team from last year’s tanking clubs that would take a step this season but they’re once again one of the three bottom seeds.
The reality is they still need some pieces so if failing this season gets them Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson then the ends will justify the means.
Occasionally they put up a big game just to remind everyone about the young talent on the squad like their last two victories defeating the Mavericks in overtime and beating the Heat on the road. Even their loss to the Pelicans was closer than New Orleans would’ve liked.
Saddiq Bey led the way with 25 points while Killian Hayes continued his hot streak recording a double-double of 17 points and 12 assists plus six rebounds.
Detroit’s statistical performances aren’t looking great on either side of the hardwood. They allow opponents to score an average of 117.3 points per game which ranks 28th.
Their opponent’s field goal percentage is 48.5% also ranking 28th while opponents average 35.1% from deep which ranks 13th overall.
Offensively, the Pistons score 110.3 points per game (23rd). From an efficiency perspective, the Pistons shoot the third worst of the 30 teams with 44.9% from the field and rank 18th from the perimeter shooting 34.4%.
Isaiah Livers (shoulder) is doubtful while Cade Cunningham (shin) is out indefinitely.
Memphis Grizzlies
With Ja Morant back on the court the Grizzlies were much more productive offensively. Although the Thunder kept the game close for three-quarters, Morant took over in the fourth to put the game out of reach finishing with a triple-double of 26 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists.
Jaren Jackson Jr. didn’t take many shots (5 of 9) but had an efficient night with 12 points (2 of 4 from deep), three rebounds, an assist, two steals, and five blocks. Dillon Brooks chipped in with 24 points while Brandon Clarke (17) and Santi Aldama (14) added double-digit scoring.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 114.8 points per game ranking 11th overall. Memphis shoots 46.0% from the field ranking 21st, and 36.1% from the perimeter ranking 13th.
Defensively, Memphis allow their opponents to score 112.8 points per game (14th). Opponents shoot 46.1% from the field (9th) and 36.2% from deep (19th).
With news Desmond Bane is expected to miss another three to four weeks the Grizzlies will need to weather the storm of his absence similarly to how they dealt with Ja Morant’s absence last season.
Memphis is 7-5 without Bane and on a current four-game win streak. Based on the new timeline Bane could miss eight to 12 more games.
In addition to Bane, Steven Adams (shoulder) is questionable. Jake LaRavia (foot) is doubtful, and Danny Green (knee) is out.

Although the Grizzlies can put up points in bunches, and I do envision a win, the spread feels a bit rich.
In the prior meeting, Memphis won by 10 points. Maybe playing at home provides the energy required to lift them higher but I’m inclined to take the points.
