Pistons vs. Cavaliers Gameday
Saturday offers up a change of venue for the Detroit Pistons, who travel to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in their semi-finals series.
The Pistons hold a two-game lead in the series after taking Game 2 by a score of 107-97. Five Pistons scored in double digits, led by Cade Cunningham with 25 points and 10 assists in his double-double effort.
Just three Cavaliers scored in double figures, with Dolnovan Mitchell scoring 31 while Jarrett Allen posted 22 points and James Harden chipped in with 10 points.

Detroit Pistons vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head this season, the teams split their four meetings, each winning twice. Cleveland has dominated in postseason matchups, taking three of the four previous meetings, including 2016, when they last met.
Unlike their opponent, I think the Cavaliers didn’t benefit from going the distance in Round 1. They have the most expensive roster in the association and were playing a depleted Raptors squad that was missing their starting point guard and top scorer (for half of the series).
Detroit sewed up the top seed with ample time to spare, allowing the club to ease Cunningham back into rhythm while also taking the final few games to sit and rest their core. They were pushed to the limit in the first round, but that challenge allowed them to dig into their defensive identity and may actually help them in this series.
The Cavaliers are favored by 4.5 points with an over/under of 212.5 points.
Pistons Stats
Detroit ranks 16th offensively (116.8), second defensively (108.7), and tied for third in net rating (+8.1) while running a pace of 100.00, which ranks 19th in the association.
The East’s top-place Pistons average 27.5 assists (13th) and 45.6 rebounds (eighth). Detroit scores 117.5 points per game while its opponents average 109.6 points.
Team leaders* in the key categories are Cade Cunningham for scoring (24.5), assists (9.9), and steals (1.5), while Jalen Duren leads rebounding (10.7), and Isaiah Stewart leads for blocks (1.6).
Perimeter scoring is a weakness for the Pistons, who shoot with an efficiency of 35.3% as a team, with four players shooting over the league average.

Cavaliers Stats
Cleveland ranks sixth (118.3) on offense and 15th on defense (114.1). Additionally, the Cavs rank ninth in net rating (+4.1) and run the 13th quickest pace (100.70).
The East’s fourth-place Cavaliers average 28.5 assists (seventh) and 44.4 rebounds (11th). Cleveland scores 119.5 points per game while their opponents average 115.4 points.
Team leaders* for the Cavs are Donovan Mitchell for points (27.9) and steals (1.5), James Harden for assists (7.7), while Evan Mobley is tops for rebounds (9.0) and blocks (1.7).
As a team, the Cavaliers shoot 36.0% from the perimeter with six players shooting above the league average.

Detroit Pistons vs. Cleveland Cavaliers bottom line:
If the Cavaliers are going to make this a series Game 3 becomes a must-win for them. To get there they’ll need a few things to happen:
- They can’t afford to fall behind early and have to fight back all game
- Both James Harden and Donovan Mitchell need to be on point scoring and dishing dimes while protecting the ball
- Evan Mobley has to show up

Pistons Cavaliers Free Pick: Cavaliers -4.5
Here is my Pistons Cavaliers free pick.
Cleveland has the most expensive roster in the NBA and added depth to ensure they could matchup against anyone. However, what they forgot to add was some grit and character to this squad which has stood out the entire postseason.
They look soft and when Evan Mobley is having to be convinced to play with more aggression, that feels like a recipe for disaster.
Per John Schuhmann: Live-ball turnovers were an issue in the first round, especially because Toronto seemed to turn most of them almost immediately into transition points. Now the Cavs will face the team (Detroit) that averaged 10.4 steals per 100 possessions in the regular season, the most for any team in the last 13 years.
Still, with their backs against the wall this is the match the Cavaliers HAVE to win, so I’ll take them in Game 3 to win and cover with the caveat this series already feels like it’s over. We’ll see if Cleveland can change my mind on Saturday.
