Pistons vs. Cavaliers Gameday
They say a series doesn’t start until someone wins on the road. The Cavaliers were the first to clear that hurdle, winning Game 5 versus the Detroit Pistons 117-113 in overtime.
Although the Pistons held the lead for most of the game, up 15 at the half and by 9 with just 3 minutes remaining, they failed to collect the W. Four Pistons scored in double figures, led by Cade Cunningham with 39 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists, but also six turnovers.
Five Cavaliers scored in double figures, led by James Harden, who put up 30 points with eight rebounds and six assists, but like Cade had six turnovers.

Detroit Pistons vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head this season, the teams split their four meetings, each winning twice. Cleveland has dominated in postseason matchups, taking three of the four previous meetings, including 2016, when they last met.
Unlike their opponent, I think the Cavaliers didn’t benefit from going the distance in Round 1. They have the most expensive roster in the association and were playing a depleted Raptors squad that was missing their starting point guard and top scorer (for half of the series).
Detroit sewed up the top seed with ample time to spare, allowing the club to ease Cunningham back into rhythm while also taking the final few games to sit and rest their core. They were pushed to the limit in the first round, but that challenge allowed them to dig into their defensive identity and may actually help them in this series.
The Cavaliers are favored by four points with an over/under of 209.5 points.
Pistons Stats
Detroit ranks 16th offensively (116.8), second defensively (108.7), and tied for third in net rating (+8.1) while running a pace of 100.00, which ranks 19th in the association.
The East’s top-place Pistons average 27.5 assists (13th) and 45.6 rebounds (eighth). Detroit scores 117.5 points per game while its opponents average 109.6 points.
Team leaders* in the key categories are Cade Cunningham for scoring (24.5), assists (9.9), and steals (1.5), while Jalen Duren leads rebounding (10.7), and Isaiah Stewart leads for blocks (1.6).
Perimeter scoring is a weakness for the Pistons, who shoot with an efficiency of 35.3% as a team, with four players shooting over the league average.

Cavaliers Stats
Cleveland ranks sixth (118.3) on offense and 15th on defense (114.1). Additionally, the Cavs rank ninth in net rating (+4.1) and run the 13th quickest pace (100.70).
The East’s fourth-place Cavaliers average 28.5 assists (seventh) and 44.4 rebounds (11th). Cleveland scores 119.5 points per game while their opponents average 115.4 points.
Team leaders* for the Cavs are Donovan Mitchell for points (27.9) and steals (1.5), James Harden for assists (7.7), while Evan Mobley is tops for rebounds (9.0) and blocks (1.7).
As a team, the Cavaliers shoot 36.0% from the perimeter with six players shooting above the league average.

Detroit Pistons vs. Cleveland Cavaliers bottom line:
I’d been calling for Evan Mobley to show up in the series, and he did, which, in my opinion, was the difference in Game 5.
Now it’s time for J.B. Bickerstaff to make some decisions and adjustments. The big elephant in the room is the play of Jalen Duren, who has been M.I.A., while Isaiah Stewart hasn’t been much better.
Paul Reed has put up the best performance of the bigs and has warranted the start. We’ll see if J.B. makes that dramatic a move with their year on the line.

Pistons Cavaliers Free Pick: Pistons +4
Here is my Pistons Cavaliers free pick.
All the momentum is on the Cavaliers’ side as they look to close out the series at home (where they’ve yet to lose in the postseason).
Detroit, on the other hand, is in a similar boat as they were against the Magic, but the major difference is that the Cavaliers have a robust offense.
Per John Schuhmann: Live-ball turnovers were an issue in the first round, especially because Toronto seemed to turn most of them almost immediately into transition points. Now the Cavs will face the team (Detroit) that averaged 10.4 steals per 100 possessions in the regular season, the most for any team in the last 13 years.
Detroit’s back is against the wall, and while the trends are in favor of the Cavaliers, I’m not sold on them being unflappable.
I think Bickerstaff will make the appropriate adjustments and put in Reed either to start or early in the match. Cade Cunningham has been terrific, but his turnovers were brutal, especially the last four, which likely cost the Pistons the win.
Factor in that James Harden has a propensity to disappear in close-out games, and I’m going to roll with the Pistons to extend the series to the max, so I’ll take the points.
