Detroit Pistons
The large and intriguing crop of rookies in the NBA this season has made Zion Williamson’s absence palatable.
Ja Morant has thrilled the fans; mid-round picks like Rui Hachimura and PJ Washington have played a consistently important role for their teams; and Kendrick Nunn might be the Rookie of the Year frontrunner for what he’s done with the Miami Heat in his second season removed from the college game.

Detroit has a rookie who has only just started playing significant minutes who looks like someone worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the season.
Sekou Dombouya was born in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa, and thus became the first player from his country drafted to the NBA when Commissioner Adam Silver called his name with the fifteenth pick last summer.
Dombouya was born in Guinea but moved to France when he was a year old. Like so many players of African descent who have made it to the top of the sport, he started out playing football but started playing basketball instead as a teenager due to his height.
He scaled the French ranks quickly, signing his first professional contract at fifteen, and was drafted by the Pistons at eighteen (he only just turned nineteen two days before Christmas).
With Blake Griffin out, Dombouya played twenty-seven minutes against the Clippers last week and thirty-eight minutes two nights later, recording a double-double in each game.
He scored another eleven points in thirty-four minutes against the Lakers on Sunday, a game Detroit lost, but covered, 106–99.
Dombouya is 6’9” and strong with the ability to defend most anybody. His offensive game is more refined than a young man of his age and Dombouya flashes potential as a shooter and someone who can handle the ball close to the basket and finish.
It’s not just Griffin’s injury that has opened up so much playing time for Dombouya. Luke Kennard and Markieff Morris are both out but both guys, and Griffin, may not be out a whole lot longer. When they return, they will be competing for minutes with Dombouya.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland will host the Pistons after losing, at home, to the Timberwolves on Sunday, 118–103.
Karl-Anthony Towns didn’t play for Minnesota, which got twenty-two points from Gorgui Dieng and twenty-one from Shabazz Napier. Jarrett Culver was the low-man in Minnesota’s starting lineup with fourteen points.
Dante Exum, the former fifth-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft out of Australia, scored a career-high twenty-eight points for the Cavaliers.
That was the draft that started with Andrew Wiggins (who scored fifteen points against the Cavs on Sunday), Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid.
Aaron Gordon went fourth to the Magic and then Utah called Exum’s name. To be fair, there was a drop-off in talent after Gordon, though many good players were selected after Exum — guys like Zach LaVine, TJ Warren and Gary Harris.
The best player taken in the draft, however — perhaps with the exception of Embiid — was Nikola Jokic, who was selected with the forty-first pick by the Denver Nuggets.
