Friday, December 23rd the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks meet for the third of four scheduled meetings with Atlanta hosting the final contest on March 21st.
Atlanta won both prior meetings on October 26th (118-113) and 28th (136-112).
Both teams last played Wednesday with the Pistons losing 93-113 to the 76ers while the Hawks lost a 108-110 heartbreaker at the buzzer to the Bulls.

Of the clubs who have tipped their hats that they are committed to tanking, none has been more obvious than the Pistons. The teams they’re battling for that bottom seed have either had a mini-win streak or are pushing to go on one.
Perhaps Detroit will wait until they’re confident they can’t be caught on the bottom but with Adam Silver declaring ‘purposeful tankers’ would be penalized I wonder if this was a smart option to take.

Their opponent’s field goal percentage is 48.5% ranking 27th while their best defensive stat in the key categories is the opponent’s three-point percentage as foes shoot 35.5% from deep which ranks 12th overall.
Offensively, the Pistons score 110.8 points per game which ranks 23rd. From an efficiency perspective, the Pistons shoot the fourth worst of the 30 teams (27th) with 44.9% from the field and rank 20th from the perimeter shooting 34.6%.
Isaiah Livers (shoulder) is out while Cade Cunningham (shin) had surgery and was shut down for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
Payback for A.J. Griffin’s recent buzzer-beater versus the Bulls came in the form of Ayo Dosunmu’s buzzer-beater on Wednesday. And while the Bulls have their own internal conflict this loss unleashed adversity and unrest in the locker room.
Things continue to be tense in Atlanta and whispers have now become open comments as Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report noted that rival executives believe Trae Young could demand a trade this offseason.
Reports of this nature aren’t spoken out loud unless there is already some truth to them. So this feels more like planted information by Young’s camp to get what he wants (Nate McMillan fired).
Atlanta ranks 14th in scoring averaging 114.1 points per game, 18th from the field shooting 46.5%, and 26th from the perimeter: 33.2%. On defense, opponents score 115.4 points (19th), 47.3% field goal percentage (18th), and 34.5% perimeter percentage (7th).
Clint Capela (calf) is out indefinitely.
