Tuesday, December 27th, the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings meet for the first of three scheduled matches this season and will play immediately again as they participate in a back-to-back baseball set in Sacramento. Denver will host the final meeting on April 9th.
Denver last played on Christmas Day delivering an instant classic in their 128-125 overtime victory versus the Suns while the Kings got an extended holiday rest having last played Friday in a sobering 111-125 loss to the Wizards.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Nuggets sweeping the regular-season series. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 99 of their 192 matches.
Denver Nuggets
Preseason predictions for MVP rarely cited Nikola Jokic in the top three let alone the top five. Not because he’s not universally viewed in that tier of players, but because of voter fatigue.
Media members suggested Jokic three-peating was highly unlikely unless the Nuggets won the West, he averaged a near triple-double and stood out from the field in a unique way making it impossible to ignore him.
Then the Christmas Day game of 41 points, 15 rebounds, and 15 assists triple-double happened. The overtime win coupled with the Grizzlies’ loss established the Nuggets in sole possession of first in the West.
Jokic is averaging a near triple-double of 25.4 points and 11.0 rebounds (2.3 offensive boards) and 9.4 assists plus 1.5 steals. And that unique outlier? The Joker has an on/off court differential of +23.4 and a true shooting percentage of 68.5 percent (both insane numbers)
He’s taking 15.6 shots and connecting at 61.6 percent efficiency from the field shooting 33.8 percent from the perimeter on 2.4 attempts and getting to the line 6.9 times per match connecting with 79.0 percent efficiency.
Denver ranks sixth in scoring averaging 116.0 points per game, second in proficiency from the field: 50.5% and possesses the best perimeter efficiency of 38.8%.
There is ample work to do defensively, and for as bad as the numbers look they are improving as their win versus the Grizzlies demonstrated.
On the season, Denver ranks 17th for opponent scoring allowing 114.1 points per game, while foes shoot 48.5% from the field and 36.4% from the perimeter ranking 27th and 20th overall.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (wrist sprain) is probable. Jeff Green (left finger sprain/hand fracture) and Collin Gillespie (leg fracture) are out.

Sacramento Kings
The Kings continue to be in the mix to garner one of the top six seeds but the path to get there may have just gotten much more difficult given the injury update on Domantas Sabonis’ hand.
Sabonis suffered an avulsion fracture of the ulnar collateral ligament of the right thumb. He’s going to play through it which could be extremely painful, but at least it’s on his none shooting hand.
Offensively, the Kings are among the very best in the association with the second-best scoring output averaging 118.1 points per game.
Similarly, they perform well in the proficiency areas ranking fourth-best for field goal percentage registering 48.7% while they rank a respectable 15th for perimeter percentage shooting 35.5% from deep.
Sacramento ranks 24th in opponent scoring allowing 116.2 points per game while foes shoot 48.5% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking 26th and 25th respectively.
Sabonis (thumb) is questionable.

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
For those who missed the Christmas games if you’re going to go back and watch just one, select the Nuggets – Suns match.
It was by far the best and most competitive match of the day which featured seven dunks by Aaron Gordon including the last one that was the game-winner (see above video).
And for those who wondered why I’ve been calling for Denver to ascend to the top of the ladder in the West this game perfectly encapsulates the uniqueness of Nikola Jokic and his squad.
They still need to iron out a few kinks like letting teams back into matches but with Michael Porter Jr. back and Jamal Murray rounding into form, this is the perfect time in their schedule to create separation between themselves and the rest of the West.
