On Monday, January 2nd finds the Denver Nuggets playing the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first of four scheduled matches. The teams will play again on January 18th in Denver and then complete the season series in a home-and-home series on February 5th and 7th.
Denver is completing a back-to-back set having beat their conference-leading counterpart the Celtics on New Year’s Day (123-111) while the Wolves last played Saturday in a 104-116 loss to the Pistons.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 85 of their 137 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with Denver sweeping the season series.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Sunday evening, January 1st. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Monday, January 2nd.
Denver Nuggets
With the Pelicans losing on New Year’s Eve, the Nuggets took over sole possession of the top spot in the Western Conference and increased that half-game lead via their victory versus the Celtics.
Jamal Murray sat the front side of the back-to-back which was an interesting choice — although he was expected to sit one of the two matches the team elected the harder opponent to rest him against.
In hindsight, that move might prove insightful as Murray can inject energy while his teammates will all be fatigued.
Denver ranks sixth in scoring averaging 116.4 points per game and is highly efficient shooting the second-best percentage from the field 50.8%, and the highest perimeter percentage 39.4%.
Denver ranks 17th for opponent scoring allowing 114.4 points while limiting foes to 48.6% from the field and 36.5% from deep ranking 26th and 23rd.
Jeff Green (left finger sprain/hand fracture) and Collin Gillespie (leg fracture) are out.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The losing streak has hit six and the Wolves sit on the outside of the play-in portion of the ladder in 11th, two games behind the Jazz. Worse, the recent loss came at the hands of the Pistons who were missing core players and erased a double-digit deficit in a game the Wolves called a ‘must’win’.
The only thing that’s saved them from plummeting even further into the basement is the Thunder and Lakers have failed to string together consecutive wins while the Jazz and Blazers are also struggling.
The initial defensive improvement by Minnesota are long gone with the team allowing 115.9 points per game ranking 22nd while they shoot 46.1 from the field and 36.8% from deep ranking sixth and 27th.
Offensively, the Wolves score 114.4 points per game (15th), while shooting 48.9% from the field (4th) and 34.1% from the perimeter (24th).
Jordan McLaughlin (calf), Taurean Prince (shoulder), and Karl-Anthony Towns (calf) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nuggets are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Wolves are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Nuggets are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games on the road.
- The Wolves are 1-7 SU in their last 8 games when playing at home against Denver.
- The Nuggets are 7-1 SU in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Minnesota’s last 5 games at home.
Free Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
A closed-door players-only meeting occurred following the loss to the Pistons which theoretically will translate to Minnesota bringing far more energy into this match.
While Minny is on life support, in contrast the Nuggets are rolling with improvements defensively and even their bench has begun hitting shots. The question is whether that output will travel to road games.
I don’t doubt the Wolves will try to demonstrate they’ve bought into whatever they discussed in the meeting and come out punching in the first quarter. The question is if the Nuggets hit back how the Wolves will respond. If it’s similar to what happened versus the Pistons the fans might boo the Wolves off the floor.
Denver is 2-1 in second games of back-to-back sets losing by a single point to the Kings in a controversial end of game no call on a clear foul against Jokic.
There’s a reason I earmarked the Nuggets to win the West and unlike the Wolves, they DO have that ‘look in their eyes’ and ARE willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the team.
