Wednesday, January 25th finds the Denver Nuggets playing the Milwaukee Bucks in the first of two scheduled matches. Denver will host the second contest on March 25th.
The Nuggets are completing a back-to-back set having squeaked out a 99-98 victory versus the Pelicans on Tuesday while the Bucks last played Monday trouncing the Pistons 150-130.
Last season, the squads split the two regular season contests each winning on the opponent’s court. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Bucks in 63 of their 101 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, January 24th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, January 25th.
Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic returned to the lineup after sitting two games to rest a sore hamstring and immediately made a difference.
The reigning MVP offered his 15th triple-double (25 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) and scored the winning basket.
Head coach Michael Malone was also back from a brief COVID-19 quarantine but the Nuggets were still shorthanded missing Michael Porter Jr. and Bones Hyland.
Although the game got close down the stretch the Nuggets were able to make the necessary stops because their clutch time defense is on a different level.
Stats
Denver possesses the best offense in the league scoring 116.9 points per game on average which ranks seventh. Also, their efficiency is the high mark in the NBA ranking first from the field with 51.0% effectiveness and also first from the perimeter shooting 39.7%.
To be sure, defensively the Nuggets are improving. So far, they allow opponents to score 112.6 points per game which ranks 13th while limiting foes to 47.8% from the field and 34.5% from deep ranking 23rd and sixth respectively.
Since the Nuggets are playing a back-to-back they haven’t submitted an updated injury list. Presumably, Jokic (hamstring) may rest while Porter Jr. (personal), and Hyland (finger) remain questionable. Peyton Watson (groin) and Collin Gillespie (leg fracture) are out.
Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks were 2-3 without Giannis Antetokounmpo but he made his return to the hardwood Monday alongside his main shooting partner Khris Middleton.
Together they showed why this Bucks squad at full strength is so frightening. Giannis produced a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds in just 27 minutes of action.
Middleton was limited to 15 minutes as they ease him back into form delivering 8 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and was 2 of 4 from deep.
The one negative was their rust was evident via the 10 turnovers Giannis (4) and Middleton (6) had.
Stats
As can be seen, opponents score the seventh-fewest points with the Bucks allowing 111.8 per game limiting opponents to 45.7% from the field and 35.0% from deep ranking fourth and eighth respectively.
Keep an eye on the Bucks and specifically their offensive standings now that Middleton is back — odds are they start climbing the standings.
Milwaukee scores 113.2 points per game ranking 18th while shooting 45.8% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and 17th in the latter two categories
MarJon Beauchamp (wrist) is probable while Bobby Portis (knee sprain) and Serge Ibaka (personal) are out.

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
This could be an NBA Finals preview featuring my preseason picks and I’d typically lean heavily toward the Nuggets, taking the points but also picking them to win.
The problem — already missing core contributors Denver might rest Jokic because of his comments about the hamstring still not feeling right.
Plus a significantly healthier Bucks squad will be keen to send a message while simultaneously conducting a litmus test of how they measure up versus Denver.
That said, my gut says Jokic plays so am basing my pick on his presence but if he’s out – feel free to switch to the Bucks.
