Dallas Mavericks
While the Suns have vaulted up the standing behind a four-game winning streak and the Kings capitalized on circumstances, the Mavericks are struggling.
Sacramento did what most pundits assumed Dallas would do by seizing a golden opportunity with so many stars out injured in the West.
The Nuggets’ big three have all missed games, Ja Morant has been in and out of the lineup, while the Pelicans, Clippers, and Suns have all had to navigate without their best player and often their top two players.
On top of losing Christian Wood to a fractured thumb, the Mavericks are reeling on both ends of the court registering just two wins in their last nine matches.
And one of those wins required overtime.
Now per ESPN Tim MacMahon Doncic is talking to the front office asking for upgrades.
‘He’s certainly not satisfied to be in the middle of the playoff pack. Doncic is a fiery competitor with a championship pedigree, having won titles with the Slovenian national team and Real Madrid, and patience isn’t high on his list of virtues… Sources said Doncic, who hasn’t shown a desire to be involved in personnel matters in the past, has strongly indicated he wants the Mavs to upgrade before the Feb. 9 trade deadline.’ – MacMahon
Stats
On defense, the Mavs have slipped lately regressing in each of the three categories. They allow 112.5 points per game which ranks 12th. In terms of efficiency, opponents are shooting 48.1% from the field and 35.6% from the perimeter ranking 25th and 11th respectively.
The Mavericks score 112.9 points per game ranking 20th overall. As for their efficiency, they shoot 47.2% from the field and 36.1%.from the perimeter ranking 16th and 14th respectively.
Christian Wood (thumb fracture) and Maxi Kleber (torn hamstring) are out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
It sure didn’t take long for the Suns to get right back into the thick of the playoff seeds. Despite losing 12 of 14 games while navigating copious injuries the return of Cameron Johnson and Chris Paul immediately offered resolution.
In the easy win versus the Hornets, Johnson led the way with 24 points on an extremely efficient 9 of 11 from the field and 6 of 7 from the perimeter.
Six Suns scored in double-figures with CP3 adding a double-double of 14 points and 11 assists.
Stats
Phoenix averages 113.0 points per game dropping to 19th (they ranked top 10 the majority of the season). They are shooting 46.3% from the field and 38.8% from the perimeter ranking 22nd and third overall.
Defensively opponents score 111.7 points ranking seventh. Meanwhile, they limit opponent shooting to 47.0% from the field and 36.2% from the perimeter ranking 12th and 17th respectively.
Deandre Ayton (illness) is probable for Thursday. Landry Shamet (foot), Cameron Payne (foot), Devin Booker (groin), and Jae Crowder (trade request) are out.
