Monday, January 10th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers and Sacramento Kings playing for the second and final time this season. Cleveland won the initial match on December 11th (117-103).
Both teams are playing back-to-back sets with the Cavs losing the Warriors (82-96) while the Kings also lost (88-103) to the Blazers. Last season, the squads played twice with the Kings winning both contests. The Kings hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 62 of their 122 matches.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The youngsters on the Cavaliers got a bit of a taste of what making the postseason would mean as the Chase Center was electric to welcome back Klay Thompson.
While Cleveland played solidly particularly on defense they seemed a little off likely due to the playoff-type atmosphere. Uncharacteristically, the Cavs struggled with protecting the ball turning it over 19 times leading to 25 Warriors points.
Another area the Cavs showed that perhaps the atmosphere was impacting them was rebounding as they typically own the glass and paint because of their length. Golden State outrebounded them 54 to 42 and won the offensive glass 22 to 8 which lead to copious second-chance scoring opportunities.
Lamar Stevens was the top producer with 17 points although most came in the first half. Rajon Rondo continues to integrate with his new team and had one of the team’s better performances with 15 points including going 3 of 3 from deep.
Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley chipped in 12 and 11 points but neither were as dominant as they’ve typically been this season particularly on the glass.
Isaac Okoro (elbow) is out indefinitely while Ricky Rubio (ACL) and Collin Sexton (ACL) are lost for the season.
Sacramento Kings
It’s looking like the Kings will miss the playoffs for the 16th straight season as they fell for the fourth consecutive time. Sacramento has some quality assets on their club – mostly complementary pieces that could push an elite team over the top but as assembled don’t mesh well enough to string together wins of their own.
Typically the West is full of contenders but this season more teams are struggling in the conference which is the only thing saving their playoff hopes as they sit 11th a half game out of the play-in tournament.
As the trade deadline approaches that could either equate to the Kings blowing things up, management trying to shore up their own depth or making tweaks via player swaps for better fits with their exiting talents.
Standing pat won’t cut it so keep an eye on the Kings as February 10th draws closer.
In the loss, Tyrese Haliburton led the way with 17 points while Alex Len registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox (14), Harrison Barnes (13), and Buddy Hield (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Richaun Holmes and Damian Jones (both in protocols) and Mo Harkless (ankle) are questionable for Monday

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction: Cavaliers -3.5
Although the Cavaliers sit sixth in the East they are struggling as much as the Kings of late losing five of seven so they’ll be dialed in to get back on track.
Keep an eye on the charity stripe as the Cavs are disciplined allowing teams the second-fewest free throws while the Kings get to the line the fourth-most. That could be the x-factor in this match.
