Friday, January 27th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the OKC Thunder for the second and final time this season. The Cavaliers won the initial match 110-102 on December 10th.
Cleveland is completing a back-to-back set having beaten the Rockets 113-95 on Thursday while the Thunder lost a shoot-out 132-137 against the Hawks on Wednesday.
All-time the Cavaliers have the advantage of winning 68 of the 120 matches. Last season, the teams played twice with Cleveland winning both contests.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Yet another victory for the Cavaliers who feast against lower-tier teams. Missing the recently announced All-Star starter Donovan Mitchell his backcourt partner Darius Garland led the charge.
Garland served up 26 points, nine assists, four rebounds, and three steals while connecting on five of his eight 3-point attempts. Sophomore Evan Mobley added 21 points
While the Cavaliers easily routed the Rockets without his services, I’ll reiterate an early observation of how this Cavs team has feasted on lower-tier teams but hasn’t been as successful against elite clubs unless stars are out which they’ve benefited from repeatedly.
Case in point, of the 27 matches the Cavaliers have played versus teams with .500 or better records Cleveland is 13-14. Dive a little deeper though and those 13 wins are precarious as eight of the opponents were missing either their best player or several of their top players.

- Mavericks: Luka Doncic, Spencer Dinwiddie, Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell, Josh Green, Davis Bertans
- Suns: Devin Booker, Cameron Johnson | in the second meeting Chris Paul and Cam Payne were also out
- Bucks: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton | the latter was out in both losses
- Pelicans: Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Herb Jones
Stats
Offensively, Cleveland scores 111.5 points per game (26th) shooting 48.3% (6th) and 36.4% from deep (11th). Defensively, the Cavs rank first for opponent scoring with 107.0 points per game.
Also, Cavs opponents shoot 46.7% from the field (8th) and 37.1% from deep (26th).
Donovan Mitchell missed prior matches with a groin injury then tweaked the injury in the loss to the Knicks. He sat out the game versus the Rockets and is listed as questionable but it’s far more likely the Cavs exercise caution to ensure the injury is fully healed.
Kevin Love also sat on Thursday with back spasms although he doesn’t appear on the injury report could be questionable Friday. Dylan Windler (ankle) is out indefinitely.
OKC Thunder
Although they lost to the Hawks it was a close game that could’ve had a different result if the Thunder had played with the same defensive intensity that led them to win seven of their prior nine matches.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was spectacular once again with 36 points, five rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and two blocks. Unfortunately, he got blocked twice at game end (questionably fouled) allowing the Hawks to net the win.
Josh Giddey offered 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals while rookie Jalen Williams chipped in 24 points.
Stats
Offensively, the Thunder scores 116.9 points per game ranking 7th while shooting 46.7% from the field (21st) and 35.9% from deep (15th). OKC limits opponents to 116.0 points per game (20th) who shoot 46.5% from the field (7th) and 35.4% from deep (10th).
Aleksej Pokusevski (leg) and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (ankle) are out Friday while Chet Holmgren is shut down for the season.
