Thursday, January 26th finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Houston Rockets playing the first of two scheduled matches. Cleveland will play host on March 26th.
Cleveland last played on Tuesday losing 103-105 to the Knicks while the Rockets are completing a back-to-back set having lost 103-108 to the Wizards on Wednesday.
Last season, the squads played twice with the teams splitting the two contests. The Rockets hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 88 of their 136 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Wednesday evening, January 25th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, January 26th.
Cleveland Cavaliers
For as good as the Cavaliers have played this season and in spite of sitting in the upper safe tier of playoff contenders I have to keep asking whether this team has the goods to beat the upper echelon.
Through their last 10 games, they are 4-6 but in three of those matches (Suns, Pelicans, Bucks) the opponent was missing their top two players (some had additional key absences).
Getting to play the Rockets is a bonus for this team that takes care of the lower-tier clubs but it begs the question if Koby Altman needs to make one or two additional moves at the trade deadline.
Also of note, Donovan Mitchell returned after missing three games due to a groin strain and felt it hampered him late in the match versus the Knicks stating his legs cramped and the groin was still an issue.
“I went up to try and dunk it, both my legs cramped and my groin just tightened and locked up on me,” Mitchell said during a postgame press conference. “Three things happened at the same time.”
Stats
Offensively, Cleveland scores 111.5 points per game ranking 26th while shooting 48.4% from the field and 36.3% on the perimeter ranking sixth and 12th respectively.
At this instant, Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 107.2 points per game. Also, Cavs opponents shoot 46.6% from the field and 37.2% from deep ranking eighth and 27th.
On the negative side, Mitchell (groin) is questionable while Dylan Windler (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Houston Rockets
Although Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. get most of the shine when the Rockets are discussed it’s the big man Alperen Sengun who continues to be the most consistent player on the Rockets.
He’s averaging close to a double-double of 15.4 points and 8.9 rebounds (3.3 on the offensive glass) plus he’s adding 3.3 assists and a block in just 27.8 minutes per game.
Stats
Offensively, the Rockets score 109.7 points per game ranking 29th overall. Houston shoots 44.8% from the field which is the worst in the league and 32.9% from the perimeter ranking 29th overall.
Defensively, the Rockets allow opponents to score 117.2 points per game which ranks 25th overall, while Houston’s foes shoot 47.5% and 36.6% from the perimeter ranking 20th and 22nd respectively.
Kevin Porter Jr. didn’t play Wednesday (foot) and is questionable for Thursday.

I’m eager to see how Sengun plays against the Cavs twin towers but this should be an easy win for Cleveland as the Rockets continue their outright tank for Wembanyama.
