Sunday, January 9th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers playing the Golden State Warriors for the second and final time this season. The initial match on November 18th was won 104-89 by the Warriors.
The Warriors last played Thursday in a 96-101 loss to the Pelicans while the Cavs arrive following a 114-101 winning effort versus the Blazers on Friday.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Warriors taking both contests and holding a nine-game winning streak versus the Cavs dating back to January 16th, 2017. The Warriors have won 65 of the 117 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The glass sneaker may not be fully intact for this year’s Cinderella team but they’ve crazy glued it back together and are making the best of the situation.
Although Cleveland lost Ricky Rubio to a torn ACL they signed another veteran guard Rajon Rondo to fulfill the same requirements and in his initial outing fit in well.
At season start, the Cavs seemed to get some lucky nods from the Basketball Gods facing teams missing their star or core players. Make no mistake the Cavaliers are an improved basketball team – – but I’m still not convinced they’ll be a top-six team.
For example, if you look at their record in the last eight games they are 3-5 but every single one of their wins came against teams missing core players. The Raptors had only four reserves available and four other guys they met on the bus.
Indiana was missing Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert neither Damian Lillard nor CJ McCollum played Friday. In fact going all the way back to November 29th, of those 12 wins only three teams (Wizards, Mavs, Wolves) weren’t missing at least two typical starters or their best player.
Isaac Okoro (elbow) is out indefinitely while Ricky Rubio (ACL) and Collin Sexton (ACL) are lost for the season.
Golden State Warriors
The much-anticipated return of Klay Thompson is expected to occur in this match. Often times when so much buildup goes into an event it has a tendency to fall short of expectations.
But – in this case, even if Thompson doesn’t score a point it will be great just to see him back on the hardwood (although I suspect he won’t go scoreless).
Both Steph Curry and Draymond Green are feeling the wear and tear of carrying the load so Thompson’s return is timely. That said, expect Steve Kerr to ease Klay back in slowly. He’ll be on a minutes restriction and not likely play on consecutive nights.
In every individual year of his eight seasons, Thompson has never shot 40 percent from deep, so teams will respect him even if it takes a while to shake off the rust (again – I think he’ll surprise). Additionally, Andrew Wiggins should be the greatest benefactor of his defensive help.
Juan Toscano-Anderson (ankle) is questionable and James Wiseman (knee) remains out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 10-0 in the last 10 head to head
- The Warriors are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
- The Cavaliers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Warriors are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Cleveland is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games versus West opponents
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Golden State’s last 6 games played in January.
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
As I prepared this post Curry (quad) and Green (hip) were both listed as questionable but ask yourself — would the Warriors go to the trouble to bring Klay back at Chase Center and do it without Steph and Draymond playing? As I came back for final edits and updates lo and behold the trio are ALL listed as probable (shocker -NOT).
The energy in Chase Center is going to be on par with a playoff game and that alone should propel the Warriors to the win and I’m predicting a double-digit margin. NBA fans should be thrilled someone of Thompson’s ilk is back – as fun as Captain Klay is — Splash Brother Klay is far more entertaining.
