Cavaliers vs. Pistons Gameday
On Thursday the #4-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in Game 2 of their semi-finals series.
Detroit took the early series lead with a 111-101 victory in Game 1. The Pistons got out to an early double digit lead, and while the Cavs made a run to tie up things late, Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren rediscovered their mojo to take control and close out the match.
Cleveland had four players score in double figures led by Donovan Mitchell (23) and James Harden (22), but the pair shot 15 for 39 and coughed up the ball a combined 10 times!
Detroit looked much more like they did during the regular season with six players scoring in double digits led by Cunningham with 23 points.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head this season, the teams split their four meetings, each winning twice. Cleveland has dominated in the postseason matchups, taking three of the four previous meetings, including in 2016 when they last met up.
Unlike their opponent, I think the Cavaliers didn’t benefit from going the distance in Round 1. They have the most expensive roster in the association and were playing a depleted Raptors squad that was missing their starting point guard and top scorer (for half of the series).
Detroit sewed up the top seed with ample time to spare, allowing the club to ease Cunningham back into rhythm while also taking the final few games to sit and rest their core. They were pushed to the limit in the first round, but that challenge allowed them to dig into their defensive identity and may actually help them in this series.
The Pistons are favored by 3.5 points with an over/under of 215.5 points.

Cleveland ranks sixth (118.3) on offense and 15th on defense (114.1). Additionally, the Cavs rank ninth in net rating (+4.1) and run the 13th quickest pace (100.70).

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons bottom line:
Game 1 served up a Pistons team that looked like themselves again. Part of that was they weren’t dealing with the ultra aggressive Magic and part of it was just how soft the Cavaliers are.
It didn’t help that Jarrett Allen got into early foul trouble. One might assume the issue was Mitchell and Harden. In reality much of the emphasis for Cleveland will fall upon Evan Mobley. He’s the x-factor in this series and if he can’t summon a more aggressive stance the Pistons will have the edge.

Cavaliers Pistons Free Pick: Pistons -3.5
Here is my Cavaliers Pistons free pick.
As I noted in Game 1, despite being the top seed it’s the Cavaliers with all the pressure on them. As the most expensive team in the association they can’t afford to lose in the semi-finals without it having major repercussions.
The club invested in it’s starting unit and pushed all their chips in to get James Harden as the final touch. So, if they fall and don’t even reach the Conference Finals, the year will be considered a bust.
Per John Schuhmann: Live-ball turnovers were an issue in the first round, especially because Toronto seemed to turn most of them almost immediately into transition points. Now the Cavs will face the team (Detroit) that averaged 10.4 steals per 100 possessions in the regular season, the most for any team in the last 13 years.
Detroit won most of the key categories in Game 1, but not by much. Still, the turnover issue (per above) remained concerning as the Cavs coughed up the ball 20 times for 31 points. The Pistons were a +15 in that category alone.
With that, this feels almost like a must win for the Cavs, but I don’t trust them. I think Mitchell is playing hurt (just doesn’t have that skip in his first step) and overall they are soft. So, take the Pistons to win and cover.
