Cavaliers vs. Pistons Gameday
Tuesday serves up the next two semi-finals, including the #4-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers traveling to play the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.
Cleveland arrives having needed the full seven games to eliminate the Toronto Raptors and delivered their best effort in Game 7, winning 114-102 to advance. Six Cavaliers scored in double figures, led by Jarrett Allen, who registered a gigantic 22 points, 19 rebounds double-double. Donovan Mitchell also scored 22 points.
Detroit also needed the full seven games to advance and took care of business, defeating the Orlando Magic 116-94. Five Pistons scored in double digits, led by Cade Cunningham with 32 points and 12 assists for a double-double, while Tobias Harris aided the superstar with 30 points and nine rebounds.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head this season, the teams split their four meetings, each winning twice. Cleveland has dominated in the postseason matchups, taking three of the four previous meetings, including in 2016 when they last met up.
Unlike their opponent, I think the Cavaliers didn’t benefit from going the distance in Round 1. They have the most expensive roster in the association and were playing a depleted Raptors squad that was missing their starting point guard and top scorer (for half of the series).
Detroit sewed up the top seed with ample time to spare, allowing the club to ease Cunningham back into rhythm while also taking the final few games to sit and rest their core. They were pushed to the limit in the first round, but that challenge allowed them to dig into their defensive identity and may actually help them in this series.
The Pistons are favored by 3.5 points with an over/under of 215.5 points.
Cavaliers Stats
Cleveland ranks sixth (118.3) on offense and 15th on defense (114.1). Additionally, the Cavs rank ninth in net rating (+4.1) and run the 13th quickest pace (100.70).
The East’s fourth-place Cavaliers average 28.5 assists (seventh) and 44.4 rebounds (11th). Cleveland scores 119.5 points per game while their opponents average 115.4 points.
Team leaders* for the Cavs are Donovan Mitchell for points (27.9) and steals (1.5), James Harden for assists (7.7), while Evan Mobley is tops for rebounds (9.0) and blocks (1.7).
As a team, the Cavaliers shoot 36.0% from the perimeter with six players shooting above the league average.

Pistons Stats
Detroit ranks 16th offensively (116.8), second defensively (108.7), and tied for third in net rating (+8.1) while running a pace of 100.00, which ranks 19th in the association.
The East’s top-place Pistons average 27.5 assists (13th) and 45.6 rebounds (eighth). Detroit scores 117.5 points per game while its opponents average 109.6 points.
Team leaders* in the key categories are Cade Cunningham for scoring (24.5), assists (9.9), and steals (1.5), while Jalen Duren leads rebounding (10.7), and Isaiah Stewart leads for blocks (1.6).
Perimeter scoring is a weakness for the Pistons, who shoot with an efficiency of 35.3% as a team, with four players shooting over the league average.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons bottom line:
Detroit dealt with an on-again/off-again Magic offense, so their challenge will be two-fold as they need to slow the Cavs backcourt duo of Harden and Mitchell while also measuring up in the front court to limit the twin towers.
Cleveland, on the other hand, struggled against the Raptors defense, who top blocked Harden and Mitchell, and this Pistons team ranked higher (2nd) than Toronto (5th), so they have their work cut out for them.

Cavaliers Pistons Free Pick: Pistons -3.5
Here is my Cavaliers Pistons free pick.
Even though the Pistons are the top Eastern seed, they have less pressure on them to win this series. They are much younger (and less expensive) than their counterpart and should have an easier time, albeit with different challenges in this series.
Conversely, the Cavaliers have all the pressure on them given their expensive roster and lackluster effort in Round 1, where a rookie outplayed the bigs and Scottie Barnes was the best player on the court.
Keep an eye on how James Harden and Donovan Mitchell perform as they’ve tended to fade away in series as the pressure mounts. Detroit has the blueprint on how to stop them, too, thanks to the Raptors.
Per John Schuhmann: Live-ball turnovers were an issue in the first round, especially because Toronto seemed to turn most of them almost immediately into transition points. Now the Cavs will face the team (Detroit) that averaged 10.4 steals per 100 possessions in the regular season, the most for any team in the last 13 years.
Ultimately, this series is a matchup between top-tier defense and top-tier offense. They say defense wins championships, so take that for what it’s worth. Both clubs were tested in the first round, which prepared them for the semi-finals, but I’m leaning toward the Pistons in Game 1 as they focus on replicating what the Raptors did to the Cavs’ backcourt and use their size to limit Allen and Mobley.
With that in mind, take the Pistons to win and cover.
