Detroit is one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. They return home after squandering a chance to get an opening game win.
Cleveland might not be much better but they were able to get the win in their opener against Charlotte. Maybe there is more there than originally thought.
The Cavs are in a great spot to start the season a surprising 2-0.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavs immediate future hopes are pinned to the backcourt of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland.
In the opener, those hopes seem well placed as the duo combined for 49 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. When they play like that the team around them can be effective.
No big man in the league is better at rebounding than Andre Drummond. He went for 14 and 14 in the season opener and his old team has no true counter for him.
Veteran PF Kevin Love is likely out for this one. If he could return and be productive in a more limited role maybe the Cavs could surprise.
Isaac Okoro was their top pick this season and he started on opening night. I like the fact that he added five assists to his 11 points. He can be an awesome complimentary player for the Cavs.
Ditto for veteran forward Larry Nance Jr. Like Drummond he had a double-double, 13/13 and like Drummond he is a low maintenance player.
Cleveland might be better than expected. I am interested to see how they perform against better teams though and Detroit is not one of them.
Detroit Pistons
Wins are going to be hard to come by for Detroit so any game where they can’t hold a real lead is going to be significant. That is what happened on Wednesday against Minnesota where they were leading into the fourth quarter.
This team has one of the worst rosters in the league, relying on past their prime stars Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose. Both of who scored 15 points in the opener.
Surprisingly the leading scorer for Detroit was wing Josh Jackson. A reclamation project already on his third team in the league he is a supreme athlete who has never been able to really put it together. Getting production from him would be great but at the same time they just made a big offseason investment in Jerami Grant, who plays the same position.
Rookie Killian Hayes got the start but was not very impactful. If it takes him a while to get comfortable in the NBA that is going to make it even harder for the Pistons to compete.
