Saturday, January 1st, finds the Chicago Bulls facing the Washington Wizards for the first time this season. They’ll face each other twice more this season with the Bulls hosting on January 7th and the Wizards on March 29th.
Chicago is on a back-to-back having won the front side 108-106 versus Indy on Friday. Washington last played Thursday in a 110-93 victory versus the Cavaliers.
Chicago Bulls
A common moniker for DeMar DeRozan is the mid-range assassin known for having the best footwork in the NBA (and the most like Kobe’s).
He’s always been comfortable in creating or taking the final shot in clutch time but with the increased media exposure he’s suddenly becoming known as the Bulls closer.
He doesn’t typically take many 3-point shots and it likely would be his last choice but that was precisely how he closed out the game and secured the victory versus the Pacers.
With the win, Chicago drew into a tie with the Nets but by virtue of already winning the season series now own the top rung.
That likely also means DeRozan’s name will garner more merit as a serious MVP candidate and by the true definition of the word “most valuable” to their team the veteran deserves that consideration.
Against the Pacers, he led with 28 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Nikola Vucevic served up a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds, Coby White was lethal from deep (6 of 7) scoring 24 points while Zach LaVine chipped in 17.
Five Bulls are in protocols with Marko Simonovic, Tony Bradley, Ersan Ilyasova, and Alfonzo McKinnie questionable for Saturday, and Lonzo Ball is out indefinitely.
Alex Caruso (foot) is out while Patrick Williams (thumb) is lost for the season.
Washington Wizards
The rollercoaster season of the Wizards continues and in truth, their identity sure seems to resonate with the former seasons that featured one constant — inconsistency.
During Bradley Beal’s entire tenure in Washington, no one ever claimed the Wizards were a reliably efficient two-way team. More common is the Wizards pushing a breakneck pace or hoisting a non-stop barrage of 3-point shots even when they aren’t falling.
Defense isn’t foreign to them, they’d simply rather play it in shorter spurts not the entire 48 minutes
Another common trait of Beal’s Wizards is their penchant for every now and then delivering an effort equivalent to ‘pulling a rabbit out of the hat’ A match where they play solidly on both ends for 48 minutes and crash the boards.
Those matches typically occur against a big market or top-tier team and this Bulls team who just claimed the East’s top spot plus are playing a back-to-back would fall perfectly into this category.
Seven Wizards are in protocols including six who are downgraded to out on Saturday – – Rui Hachimura, Brad Wanamaker, Aaron Holiday, Davis Bertans, Montrezl Harrell, and Raul Neto plus Spencer Dinwiddie who is out indefinitely.
Thomas Bryant (knee) is out indefinitely.

Free Chicago Bulls vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
Logically, this should be an easy Bulls victory but as noted this is the marquee type of match that will motivate a playoff-type performance from Beal and his Wizards.
Sharpshooter Beal may be the sexier story but the ever-reliable workman DeRozan will keep his team focused, orchestrate the game plan, and remain calm as he leads the Bulls to victory.
