On Friday, January 15th the Chicago Bulls will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in their first regular-season meeting of the 2020-21 campaign. They aren’t unfamiliar with each other as they met twice in the preseason with the Bulls winning both games one a rout and the other a squeaker.
This match also marks Bulls head coach Billy Donovan’s return to Chesapeake Energy Arena to face the team he coached the prior five seasons and his former assistant Mark Daigneault, both in OKC and in Florida who is now the head coach for the Thunder.
The Thunder own the all-time record with 75 wins in 149 matches. Last season the teams played twice with the Thunder taking both matches.
Chicago Bulls
Although Donovan knows the Thunder well there aren’t a lot of players remaining from his group last season. Only six of them returned including Isaiah Roby who appeared in just three varsity games.
That said, the Thunder still employs a similar defensive scheme to Donovan’s crew of last season which could be helpful for the Bulls.
Chicago battled in their recent match losing a close one by three points to the Clippers with both their superstars playing.
Zach LaVine exploded for 45 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Five other Bulls reached double-figure scoring including starters Garrett Temple (18), Patrick Williams (17), and Wendell Carter (12).
Coby White was the lone starter not to score in double-digits but he delivered everywhere else with nine points, 13 assists, and eight rebounds. Thaddeus Young chipped in 14 points and Denzel Valentine scored 10 in a reserve role.
Otto Porter Jr. (back) and Lauri Markkanen (calf) are both probable while Garret Temple (ankle) is questionable. Chandler Hutchison, Tomas Satoransky, and Ryan Arcidiancono remain out due to health and safety protocols.
Oklahoma City Thunder
This young Thunder squad who are supposed to be tanking didn’t appear to get the memo. They returned from a road trip where they posted a 4-1 record with wins over the Pelicans, Magic, Knicks, as well as the former face of the franchise Kevin Durant and his Nets.
For as well as OKC has played on the road they can’t seem to find that same intensity or fortune at Chesapeake Energy Arena where they’ve yet to win a game.
The most recent game featured a loss via a rout by the Lakers. The new face of the Thunder – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 17 points.
Isaiah Roby who started in place of Al Horford who was being rested on the second game of a back-to-back delivered 11 points. Rookie Aleksej Pokusevski and Darius Bazley each contributed 10 points as the only other double-figure scorers.
Darius Bazley suffered a sprained ankle versus the Lakers making his status uncertain for this match.Ty Jerome (ankle) and Trevor Ariza (personal) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Over is 11-5 in CHI last 16 road games
- Over is 8-3 in OKC last 11 home games.
- OKC are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 Fri. games.
Free Chicago Bulls vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
The Bulls have the offense and Donovan has the advantage having groomed Daigneault while the Thunder are the better defensive squad.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder -1
Can the young Thunder give Daigneault his first victory versus his mentor and finally win at home? Bazley’s presence is key but my instinct says Gilgeous-Alexander has a big game while LaVine gets a face full of Lu Dort all night.
