Wednesday, December 21st the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks meet for the second of four scheduled matches this season. Chicago won the initial December 11th overtime match 123-122. Chicago will host matches on January 23rd and April 4th.
The Bulls get the raw deal in this series once again entering on a back-to-back set having defeated Miami 113-103 on Tuesday while the Hawks got a very favorable (and questionable) whistle at game end to help them beat the Magic 126-125.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Bulls taking three of the four contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 135 of their 253 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, December 20. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, December 21.
Chicago Bulls
With the team struggling and trade rumors swirling around the Bulls big 3 they delivered an impressive victory over the Heat.
Nikola Vucevic served up a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds while DeMar DeRozan offered 24 points, five rebounds, and five assists plus Zach LaVine chipped in with 21 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
DeRozan is averaging 25.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. He’s shooting 50.4 percent from the field on 17.9 attempts, 31.0 percent from the perimeter on 1.4 attempts, and 89.1 percent from the stripe on 8.2 attempts.
Chicago scores 113.2 points per game ranking 15th while they shoot 48.3% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking sixth and 11th respectively.
Defensively, they allow 114.7 points per game ranking 18th. Their opponents shoot 48.0% from the field and 37.7% from the perimeter ranking 24th and 29th respectively.
Javonte Green (knee) is questionable. Lonzo Ball (knee) is out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks finally got some good news as John Collins and Dejounte Murray both returned from injury absences to face the red-hot Magic. As noted in the opening, they also got a very questionable home whistle call at the end of the match to hand them the win.
It’s something the Hawks have benefitted from on numerous occasions this season (I’ve watched at least three games where it was a blatant miss, and another couple I’d be annoyed about if I was the opposing team’s front office or coach).
Trae Young continues to be the most polarizing player (at least for me) as he tried after the game to offer a sound bite that was supposed to show his leadership but ended up sounding like an insult to the Magic and put down of his teammates.
With the Hawks’ defensive struggles his comment only served to highlight his lack of awareness since he’s the worst defender on his team (possibly in the NBA).
Atlanta ranks 14th in scoring averaging 114.3 points per game, 18th from the field shooting 46.6%, and 26th from the perimeter: 33.0%. On defense, opponents score 115.4 points (19th), 47.3% field goal percentage (18th), and 34.5% perimeter percentage (7th).
Clint Capela (calf) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Chicago Bulls vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
I know the Bulls are on a back-to-back and struggling this season but I’m also not sold on this Hawks club. In reality I view these teams as being much closer overall than their records indicate.
That’s why I’ll take the points and the Bulls to pull off the upset.
