Sunday, December 11th the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks meet for the first of four scheduled matches this season. Atlanta will host again on December 21st while Chicago will host matches on January 23rd and April 4th.
Chicago is completing a back-to-back set having pounded the Luka-less Mavericks 144-115 on Saturday while the Hawks lost 116-120 to the Nets on Friday.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Bulls taking three of the four contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 135 of their 252 matches.
Chicago Bulls
On the season, the Bulls have underperformed but find ways to pull out wins against some of the elite teams and yet they sit outside even the play-in tournament seeding group.
This is clearly not what Artunas Karnisovas or Marc Eversley had in mind when they reformulated the team. With December 15th rapidly approaching with many players becoming eligible to be traded the Bulls are one of the main teams to keep an eye on.
The question is whether they would be buyers or sellers. If the latter then DeMar DeRozan is a player many teams would covet based on his leadership and clutch time skills.
And most importantly, he’s a player that can create both his own shot and for others. Lots of teams have guys who can shoot but aren’t able to drive or create for themselves let alone others.
Chicago scores 113.0 points per game ranking 15th while they shoot 47.7% from the field and 36.6% from the perimeter ranking 10th and 12th respectively.
Defensively, they allow 112.9 points per game ranking 14th. Their opponents shoot 47.6% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking 22nd and 23rd respectively.
Chicago hadn’t submitted their injury report as of posting so let’s assume Javonte Green is still questionable as well as Alex Caruso who left the Mavs game with a bruised tailbone. Lonzo Ball (knee) remains out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
Since the fallout between Trae Young and Nate McMillan, the Hawks have lost three games in a row. It certainly didn’t help that Dejounte Murray injured his ankle joining John Collins and DeAndre Hunter who were already sidelined by injury.
Some good news arrived as Bogdan Bogdanovic returned to the rotation but he’s still shaking off the rust.
It feels like this situation is bubbling to a breaking point where McMillan’s job could be in danger. We’ll have to see if Young gets another coach fired and how that would impact the other players on the team.
It’s worth noting, the only reason the fight became common knowledge is someone internally leaked that news, and based on “what” was reported it sure sounded like someone isn’t as amused by Young refusing to show up even to sit on the bench for his team.
Atlanta ranks 14th in scoring averaging 113.1 points per game, 18th from the field shooting 46.5%, and 29th from the perimeter: 32.1%. On defense, opponents score 113.8 points (18th), 46.9% field goal percentage (15th), and 34.0% perimeter percentage (5th).
De’Andre Hunter (thigh) and Onyeka Okongwu (foot) are questionable while Dejounte Murray (ankle) and John Collins (ankle) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Chicago Bulls vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
If you watch a variety of teams you’ll know the Hawks games are not particularly entertaining — it’s a throwback to the Rockets’ Harden era where one star dribbles the air out of the ball in isolation.
That’s what Young is channeling and while there are some lobs at the rim and occasional fast break opportunities the offense is primarily Young searching for his own shot and if that doesn’t pan out with precious few seconds left on the shot clock he’ll pass to a teammate.
Flashback to preseason or the start of this campaign and compare it to now — there is a decided regression in ball/player movement with far fewer teammates making cuts, electing instead to stand and watch Young dribble.
Although the Bulls are playing the B2B none of the core was overly taxed with Billy Donovan playing 12 players and only three logging 31/32 minutes.
That said, if Caruso can’t go it’ll lessen the options of who guards Young but I still like the Bulls to keep this close and possibly even steal the match albeit this is sort of a must-win for Atlanta to end the losing streak.
