On Saturday, January 16th, the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors will play their second game in three days. The Raptors won the first contest 111-108.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Raptors taking two of the three contests. Charlotte holds the all-time record between the squads with 45 victories in the team’s 84 meetings.
Charlotte Hornets
Prior to losing the back-to-back set versus the Mavericks and first game in Tampa Bay to Toronto, the Hornets had strung together four consecutive wins.
In the loss to the Raptors, they almost battled back to claim the victor despite playing without their leader Gordon Hayward.
PJ Washington (20 points, 11 rebounds) and LaMelo Ball (14 points, 11 assists) each delivered double-doubles.
The Hornets starting backcourt of Terry Rozier and Devonte Graham scored 22 and 15 points respectively. The latter is significant as Graham seems to be finding his form these past few games following a tough start to the season.
Miles Bridges (12), Bismack Biyombo (10), and Malik Monk (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Gordon Hayward has a left hip strain and is questionable for Saturday.
Cody Zeller is out with a fractured hand until early February while Grant Riller (knee) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
After losing the prior two games by a single point in the fourth quarter the Raptors won a game but they can’t be feeling great given they coughed up yet another double-digit lead.
The fact Gordon Hayward wasn’t playing for the Hornets makes this win feel somewhat hollow especially with Toronto only scoring 12 points in the final frame and allowing 22.
Whether the Raptors are struggling with the adjustments required with the move to Tampa Bay is unknown but the reality is if they want to continue with the type of effort they’ve delivered the last several seasons then they need to go out and get a center who can start.
Don’t be shocked if rumors start to swirl that Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster are trying to bring in a center who can defend and stretch the court.
Two logical targets would be PJ Tucker (who has played for the Raptors twice before) or Myles Turner. The signing of Aron Baynes and Alex Len hasn’t worked and the issues Nurse is dealing with all revolve around fixing that problem.
In the win on Thursday, Chris Boucher led the way for Toronto with 25 points, 10 rebounds. Fred VanVleet (17), Kyle Lowry (16). Pascal Siakam (15), OG Anunoby (13), and Norm Powell (11) each reached double-figures.
Alex Len missed the last game to address a personal issue and won’t be with the team on Saturday. Patrick McCaw continues to rehab from offseason knee surgery with no timetable for his return.

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Although the Raptors have been in most matches and frequently held double-figure leads the fourth quarter and clutch time remain a concern.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Hornets +8
The Raptors have the edge especially if Hayward can’t play Saturday and typically I’d be inclined to say they have a breakout game but this team has issues that make them less consistent or predictable than seasons past.
