Thursday, January 12th, the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors meet for the second of four scheduled meetings. In short, this is the second game of a baseball set while Charlotte will also host a baseball set on April 2nd and 4th.
The Raptors/Hornets won the first match 132-120 on Tuesday.
Also, last season, the squads played three times with Toronto winning two of the three contests. In any event, the Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 47 of their 89 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Wednesday, evening, January 11th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, January 12th.
Charlotte Hornets
There were positives to glean from Tuesday like a season-high 14 assists as part of LaMelo Ball’s double-double that included 24 points.
Also, Terry Rozier led the way for Charlotte scoring 33 points on an efficient 14 of 19 from the field (5 of 9 from deep).
At least this match completes the Hornets four-game road trip but they’ll play nine of the next 14 back on the road and get no relief in their brief two game home stand with the Celtics in town for another baseball set.
Offense
Charlotte ranks 20th averaging 112.1 points per game and ranks 28th in field goal percentage shooting 44.8% and 30th from the perimeter shooting 32.7% from deep.
Defensively, Charlotte is giving up an average of 118.5 points (28th). Opponents shoot 48.0% from the field (24th) and 36.1% from the perimeter ranking 20th overall.
At any rate, Gordon Hayward (hamstring) is questionable. Kelly Oubre Jr. (hand) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
For the second game in a row the Raptors’ offense was rolling and their bench delivered. While many pointed at the lack of production from the Raptors’ reserves it’s important to note Nick Nurse has had a short hook with the unit.
Toronto’s bench unit played a cumulative 44, 50, and 40 minutes in their last three losses, but Tuesday played almost double that amount (79 minutes) and reaped the benefits of the sustained play.
After missing 24 games, in his sixth game back Precious Achiuwa resembled a version much closer to the player who became a critical contributor down the stretch last season scoring 13 points featuring back-to-back triples and a slam dunk.
Additionally, his energy also had a palpable effect on his linemates who collectively scored 40 points.
Stats
Two major keys to the victory were achieved via hustle actions as the Raptors won the offensive glass 18-6 and consequently won second chance scoring 20 to 4. .
Also, on offense, the Raptors score 111.7 points per game (25th) shooting 44.8% from the field (29th) and 33.0% from deep (29th). At the same time, defensively, the Raptors allow 111.4 opponent points per game ranking (11th) while shooting 48.7% (27th) from the field and 36.6% (25th).
Otto Porter Jr. had season ending surgery which means the Raptors offseason addition was a bust as OPJ played in just eight games.

With a combined 35 triples made on Tuesday, the Raptors who shot 20 of 44 (45.5%), and Hornets who shot 15 of 35 (42.9%) sure didn’t look like the 29th and 30th-ranked 3-point shooting teams.
