Wednesday, January 12th, finds the Charlotte Hornets facing the Philadelphia 76ers for the third time this season with Philly winning on December 6th (127-124 in overtime) and December 8th (110-106). The Hornets will also host the final meeting on April 2nd.
Both teams last played on Monday with the Hornets beating the Bucks (103-99) for the second consecutive game while the 76ers defeated the Rockets 111-91.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers sweeping the regular-season series and holding a 16 game winning streak running back to January 13th, 2017. The Hornets hold the advantage all-time having won 58 times of the club’s 114 meetings.
Charlotte Hornets
With two consecutive wins versus the defending champions, the Hornets will be riding a high entering this match. They continue to be an offensive powerhouse ranking second in the association (112.6).
Yet for as explosive as the offense is they continue to struggle (or ignore) defense ranking 28th (113.1) on that side of the hardwood.
The Hornets have won three in a row and six of their last eight matches. After this match, the Hornets will face five subs .500 teams in a row so they can make up some ground on the teams above them.
While Charlotte seems to match up well versus the Bucks the same can’t be said of the Sixers who’ve beaten them twice. James Borrego will be seeking a game plan to change that dynamic.
In the win Monday versus the Bucks, Miles Bridges delivered a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, LaMelo Ball offered 23 points adding five rebounds, three assists, and hit four 3-pointers.
Terry Rozier led the scoring with 27 points and Gordon Hayward chipped in 14 points.
An x-factor in the victory was the Hornets tied the Bucks on the glass (48 each) which is significant given Charlotte ranks 21st in rebounding versus the second-ranked Bucks. More impressively, Charlotte won the offensive glass battle 13 to 7.
Kelly Oubre Jr. and Vernon Carey Jr are in health and safety protocols with both out Wednesday.
Philadelphia 76ers
With the win versus the Rockets, the 76ers win streak is at seven in a row, and in concert with the streak Joel Embiid has scored 30 or more in each of those seven matches. Versus Houston, he delivered 31 points, eight rebounds, six assists, a steal, and two blocks.
In the seven games, Embiid is averaging 32.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.4 blocks. Behind his leadership, the 76ers are feasting offensively during the streak averaging 117.1 points per game while limiting opponents to 102.4 points.
Andre Drummond registered a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tobias Harris (13), Furkan Korkmaz (12), Isaiah Joe (10), Matisse Thybulle (10) were the other double-figure contributors versus Houston.
The trio of Paul Reed, Jaden Springer, and Tyrese Maxey are in protocols with Reed questionable and the latter two out. Tobias Harris (shoulder) is probable while Seth Curry (ankle) is questionable. Shake Milton (back) was downgraded to out. Ben Simmons remains out under suspension.

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
The Hornets score the second-most points in the second, third and fourth quarters but rank 11th in the first quarter which is when they typically fall behind in matches. So if the 76ers get out to an early lead don’t change the game because this is more likely to come down to the wire than not.
The Hornets don’t have a big man that can limit let alone guard Embiid so expect the 76ers superstar to feast.
