Hornets vs. Magic Gameday
Friday serves up the final two Play-In games with the Charlotte Hornets facing the Orlando Magic to decide who’ll own the last available playoff seed in the East. The winner claims the eighth seed and a series versus the Pistons, while the loser goes fishing
Charlotte got to this match by defeating the Heat 127-126 in overtime on Tuesday. It was a wild game that required last-second heroics by Coby White to force overtime and the best and worst of LaMelo Ball. Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by LaMelo Ball with 30, although he needed 31 shots to get there.
Meanwhile, the Magic continue their late-season slide as they lost 97-109 to the Philadelphia 76ers, who inked their date with the Celtics. Four Magic players scored in double figures, led by Desmond Bane with 34 points, while Paolo Banchero had a brutal effort, shooting 7 of 22 and was a team-worst -17.

Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic Odds & Last 5
Last year, the Magic dominated the Hornets, sweeping the four-game season series, while Charlotte got revenge this season, winning the series 3-1. The clubs have met in the postseason twice prior, with each club winning once.
To finish the season, the Hornets were riding on momentum, having won five of their last seven matches. Getting over the hump to keep their playoff hopes alive should add to that momentum coming into this match. Charlotte finished the season with a record of 45-37.
Orlando enters this match following the brutal losses versus the Celtics and 76ers, but had been on a five-game winning streak before that meltdown. The Magic finished the season with a 45-37 record.
The Hornets are the favorites by a 3.5 spread with an over/under of 218.5 points.

Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic bottom line:
It sure doesn’t feel like the Magic are invested in winning. Perhaps that’s not completely true, but if they are trying to win, it clearly points to some grave roster issues.
Their offense in particular looks clunky, but equally concerning is how far their defense has fallen off. Coming into this elimination game, Jamahl Mosley needs to figure out how to make the offense work with specific emphasis on how Banchero and Franz Wagner can complement each other.

Hornets Magic Free Pick: Hornets -3.5
Here is my Hornets Magic free pick.
Perimeter scoring is going to be an issue for the Magic, who allowed the Hornets to score 17, 19, and 22 deep balls in the last three meetings.
Charlotte is a young, inexperienced squad, but they are led by a player (LaMelo Ball) who lives for these rare moments. He already proved he’s not afraid to jack up shots even when they aren’t falling versus the Heat. And, when you factor in how poorly Kon Knueppel played versus Miami and should be more settled in this match, it doesn’t bode well for Orlando.
Per John Schuhmann: Orlando is still a worse-than-average offensive team, but the Magic are not going to finish in the bottom 10 on that end of the floor for a 14th straight season, having seen the league’s third biggest jump in points scored per 100 possessions from last season. But they’ve seen almost an equal jump in points allowed per 100, having lost their edge on defense.
Perhaps the saving grace for the Magic is that they tend to play much better in front of their hometown fans, but they’ll need more than the crowd to be that Sixth Man if they want to move ahead from this game.
I expect the Magic to try to use some bully ball to throw off the Hornets and rattle them, but again, this Charlotte club has a swagger that won’t easily be diminished.
Watch for the reserves to be the x-factor, and if that prediction is true, then the Hornets have the better shot with someone like Coby White stepping up.
Of note, the Hornets are on the road, but the reality is their record is better away from home. For Orlando to even be in this match, they’ll need to hit their own perimeter shots, which is asking for a lot given their typical performance from outside.
Ultimately, it just feels like the Magic players’ heads aren’t in the right mindset, so I anticipate the Hornets will be the squad moving on to face the Pistons in the first round.
With that, take Charlotte to win and cover.
