Tuesday, January 31st finds the Charlotte Hornets playing the Milwaukee Bucks for the third and final time this season. The teams have split the two prior contests with Milwaukee taking the December 3rd meeting 105-96 while Charlotte routed the Bucks on January 6th (138-109).
Both teams last played Sunday with the Hornets defeating the Heat 122-117 while the Bucks smashed the Pelicans 135-110 behind Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 50-point evening.
Last season the clubs played four times with the teams splitting those contests. The Bucks hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 64 of their 124 matches

Charlotte Hornets
Considering the Hornets have just 15 wins on the season it would make sense for them to extend their players as long as possible on the injured reserve list — which they don’t seem to be doing.
Nor does it seem like Steve Clifford is mailing in efforts or actively throwing games. Likewise, the players don’t seem to be invested in losing albeit for the majority of the season that commitment has been isolated to the offensive side of the hardwood.
Now, it’s an extremely small sample size but through the last six games, the Hornets have won four times and have registered the eighth-best defensive ranking in that time frame.
That success gives Clifford something to build upon and instills defensive principles. More importantly, three of the four opponents were on a hot streak when Charlotte beat them.
To wit, they ended Atlanta’s five-game win streak, Chicago had won three of four, and the Heat had been streaking for a while but was 7-2 when they met.
Stats
Charlotte ranks 25th averaging 112.2 points per game while shooting 45.3% from the field and 32.5% from the perimeter ranking 29th and 30th respectively.
Defensively, Charlotte is giving up an average of 118.6 points which ranks 28th. Opponents shoot 48.2% from the field (23rd) and 36.6% from the perimeter ranking 26th and 22nd respectively.
Cody Martin (knee) is questionable Tuesday. Kelly Oubre Jr. (hand) is out indefinitely.
Milwaukee Bucks
There may never be another player of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s ilk to ever grace the NBA hardwood again. Such is the uniqueness of his game coupled with his competitive demeanor.
On Sunday, he registered the fifth 50-point game of his career, and the second this month. Yet, the incredible part of this 50-piece is he collected it in just THIRTY minutes!
Stats
Opponents score the seventh-fewest points with the Bucks allowing 111.9 per game limiting opponents to 45.7% from the field and 35.1% from deep ranking fourth and eighth respectively.
Offensively, the Bucks score 114.1 points per game ranking 17th, while shooting 46.2% from the field and 36.1% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and 16th in the latter two categories.
Serge Ibaka (Bucks seeking trade partner) is out indefinitely. Bobby Portis (MCL strain) will miss at least two weeks.

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
While the Bucks’ offense hasn’t leaped off the page this season now that Middleton is back and Giannis got to rest his sore knee there are hints they will witness a sharp incline in that area.
Middleton’s four games back is an extremely small sample size but Milwaukee ranks sixth offensively in this period averaging 122.8 points. And, they’re definitely trending up ranking eighth on offense through the last 10 (without Giannis or Middleton in five of those games).
Factor in Milwaukee ranks third defensively showcasing prowess in copious areas of the court and it’s easy to look forward to the spring and consider this squad even over Boston as the team to beat in the East.
Bottom line, this will be the true test of whether the Hornets are committed to improved defense as they face the juggernaut that is Milwaukee!
To that end, it’s a massive point spread so it’s a choice of believing Clifford’s charges have bought into the defense. I’ll hesitantly give them the benefit of the doubt – but still expect Milwaukee to win by double-digits.
