Tuesday, December 27th, finds the Charlotte Hornets playing the Golden State Warriors for the second and final time this season The Hornets won the October 29th match 120-113 in overtime.
The Hornets are completing a tough back-to-back set facing the Blazers on Monday while the Warriors played on Christmas Day and reminded the Grizzlies there are teams to be concerned with in the West via their 123-109 victory.
Last season, the squads played twice each winning on their home court. All-time the teams have played on 65 occasions with the Hornets holding a slim one-game (33) edge over the Warriors.
Charlotte Hornets
Three times this season the Hornets have won multiple games – the opening week (2-1), week six (2-0), and this past week (2-1). For a team with just nine wins on the season that’s a big deal.
More importantly, Charlotte is finally close to full health and the constancy of having their core group back together is making them more competitive.
Per John Schuhmann, LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, and Gordon Hayward played together for just the third time this season in their most recent win versus the Lakers.
As the old saying goes the best ability is availability and the Hornets may reap the rewards moving forward if they can keep this core group healthy.
They’re definitely also missing the services of Miles Bridges who left a gaping hole to fill. Bridges’ ranked top three on the team in the key categories averaging 20.2 points (1st), 7.0 rebounds (2nd), and 3.8 assists (3rd) last season.
The franchise and Bridges are said to be in talks again but even if they resolve a new contract it’s likely he wouldn’t be on the court any time soon assuming the league will suspend him given he pleaded no contest to felony charges for domestic violence.
Nick Richards (ankle) didn’t play Monday and is doubtful for Tuesday. Dennis Smith Jr. (ankle) is questionable while Cody Martin (knee) is out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
The goal this season was for Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and James Wiseman to take on more prominent roles and help transition the team into the next era.
Unfortunately, through 10 weeks of play, that youthful quartet hadn’t made the impact hoped other than Poole, and even then sporadically.
Making matters worse the disparity of having the best home (13-2 as of Dec 26th) versus the worst road record (3-16) coupled with Stephen Curry’s untimely shoulder injury added a level of desperation to the defending champions who have fallen outside the play-in seeds.
Yet, Christmas Day arrived leaving the impression a genie had granted the Dubs three wishes. First, they are home for a season-high eight-game stint.
Second, Ja Morant fueled their competitive spirit by suggesting no one in the West was on their level. And third, two-way stars Anthony Lamb and Ty Jerome ascended to provide palpable benefits and that seemed to spark the other youngsters to step up their level of play.
Granted, until they can emulate the way they play at Chase Center on the road the jury will be out, but Dub Nation should feel much more optimistic today.
Andrew Wiggins (abdominal) and JaMychal Green (quarantine) are questionable. Curry (shoulder) and Andre Iguodala (hip) are out.
