Wednesday, December 30th the Dallas Mavericks host the Charlotte Hornets. Both teams enter on the heels of their first wins which were of the highly impressive variety over two of the NBA’s best clubs.
The Hornets shocked the Nets while the Mavericks set a new NBA benchmark with their stunning 51 point blowout of the Clippers.
The Mavericks hold the all-time record between the clubs with 40 wins in 59 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice each winning once.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets got out to a tough start this season looking like the moves they made in the offseason might not have been enough to nudge them up the ladder far enough to avoid the lottery again.
Then they came out and beat the Brooklyn Nets who’ve looked (at least early) like the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.
Six Hornets scored in double-figures with Gordon Hayward showcasing why Michael Jordan was so eager to sign him this past offseason. Hayward produced a line of 28 points, seven assists, and six assists.
Terry Rozier (19), PJ Washington (14), Devonte Graham (13), Bismack Biyombo (12) and Miles Bridges (10) were the other double-digit contributors.
Grant Riller (knee) missed the last three games and is questionable for Saturday. Cody Zeller suffered a broken hand that will hold him out for up to six weeks and Malik Monk is out after testing positive for COVID-19.
Dallas Mavericks
Getting out to an 0-2 start wasn’t exactly what the Mavericks had in mind as they gazed at an extremely difficult opening schedule segment.
Turns out it took until game three to get into the win column but when they claimed the ‘W’ they did so in spectacular fashion demonstrating precisely how lethal this team will eventually be if they defend consistently.
In all, 14 Mavericks appeared in the match but the damage was done in the first half. Dallas held a 23 point lead (36-13) after the first frame and a 50 point lead at the half after posting a 41-14 second frame.
The damage was done via a balanced scoring effort yet only four Mavericks reached double-figures. Luka Doncic led the way with 24 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds. Josh Richardson scored 21, Tim Hardaway Jr. dropped 18 and Jalen Brunson added 11 points.
The odd thing was the Mavericks weren’t exactly lighting it up from outside as they shot 34.1% on 14 of 41 from deep although they were more successful early in building the 50 point lead.
Kristaps Porzingis is the only Mavericks player on the injured list and is slowly working his way back with the goal to have him on the hardwood in early January.
