Wednesday, December 23rd finds two of the lower-tier Eastern Conference clubs playing their first game of the season as the Cleveland Cavaliers host the Charlotte Hornets.
Neither club was a part of the Disney bubble in Orlando subsequently this will be the first competitive game the clubs have played in over nine months that counts toward the win-loss record.
The Cavaliers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 67 wins in 112 meetings. Last season, because of the pandemic and suspended season the squads played just twice each winning once.
Charlotte Hornets
GM Mitch Kupchak had a bit of a roller coaster style offseason. LaMelo Ball is the perfect guard for their system and fits with Devonte Graham.
Charlotte stretched and waived Nicolas Batum and also moved on from Dwayne Bacon and Willy Hernangomez.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers continue to look like a club with misfitting roster pieces and still have Kevin Love locked in for another three years.
Coby Altman made a great draft selection in Isaac Okoro who is precisely the type of player Cleveland required both in terms of his position and his defensive mindset.
But, the Cavs continue their odd obsession with big men. Tristan Thompson exited but Cleveland then added JaVale McGee and as of this writing were giving Thon Maker a shot. This on top of Love, Andre Drummond (who opted in), and Larry Nance Jr.
Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff seemed to figure out some schematic situations partway through last season but those main problems remain and as such presumably the Cavaliers will be lottery-bound again.

The Hornets will also likely be lottery-bound, but something tells me they’ll be in the mix for the play-in tournament and might have some fun outings this season particularly if Washington and Bridges continue their ascent.
