On Monday, January 10th, the Brooklyn Nets, and Portland Trail Blazers will make up the game that was postponed earlier this season when the Nets were hit hard by COVID and couldn’t muster the minimum eight players required to complete the match.
Both teams are playing the second game of a back-to-back set with the Nets match moved up to noon to offset traveling to Portland. They played the Spurs in a matinee match that required overtime to decide although Brooklyn prevailed 121-119. The decimated Blazers beat the Kings 103-88.
Last season, the teams played twice with each team winning on the road. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 66 of their 92 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
Get ready for the Kyrie Irving promotional tour as the Nets play 14 of their next 20 games on the road although he won’t be able to play at MSG. It’s sure to be an offensive feast from the Nets who in all honesty should be working on their defense that’s been progressively regressing.
In the win, Sunday versus the Spurs Kevin Durant led the way with 28 points, four rebounds, six assists, a steal, and three blocks. Both Nic Claxton (16 points, 14 rebounds) and James Harden (26 points, 12 assists, plus seven rebounds) posted double-double performances.
Brooklyn almost lost a game they led by double-digits with four minutes remaining as the Spurs erased the lead and held the Nets scoreless to the buzzer forcing overtime.
With Irving back in the fold (on the road) that shouldn’t be an issue, but again, I’m curious to see if or how it messes up the “others” (not named KD or Harden) when they return to play at Barclays.
LaMarcus Aldridge (foot) is questionable, Irving is probable and Joe Harris (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
Every first-year head coach has their struggles but Chauncey Billups has been hit harder than most in his first season at the helm. The man who hired him (Tim Olshey) was fired for unbecoming conduct.
His superstar Damian Lillard hasn’t been happy with the direction of the team and is struggling with abdominal tendinopathy. It’s an issue that has plagued him for several seasons but by playing through the Olympics with it he may have made the situation worse.
Earlier this season he took some games off to rest and got a cortisone shot. When he returned he looked a bit better but clearly the pain hasn’t subsided as he’s out again and will consult a specialist to figure out the best next steps.
Making matters worse, CJ McCollum who started the season on fire, suffered a punctured lung that has kept him out the past 15 games, and the longer he’s on the shelf the more I’m convinced it has to do with COVID because it impacts the lungs and that would be a precarious situation.
In the absence of Lillard, it’s allowed Anfernee Simons to take a step which he’s embraced. Simons led the Blazers in the win versus the Kings with 31 points including seven 3-pointers. Jusuf Nurkic (16 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists) was one assist shy of a triple-double.
Norman Powell (protocols) joins Lillard and McCollum as out Monday while Larry Nance Jr. (knee) is questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Blazers are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Nets are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Heat
- The over/under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
No Lillard, McCollum, or Powell versus an active KD, Harden, and Irving – should be a no-brainer easy rout.
