Sunday, January 8th, finds the Brooklyn Nets facing the Miami Heat in the first of three scheduled contests. Brooklyn will host the second contest on February 15th while Miami will host the final match between the clubs on March 25th
Both teams last played Friday with the Nets defeating the Pelicans 108-102 while the Heat defeated the Suns 104-96.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Heat taking three of the four contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 78 wins in 133 matches versus the Nets.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Saturday, evening, January 6th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Sunday, January 8th.
Brooklyn Nets
The winning streak came to a halt versus the Bulls, but Brooklyn got right back in the win column with their victory Friday. They’ve had some good fortune with a lighter slate of opponents and faced teams without stars on copious occasions.
Such was the case on Friday when they played New Orleans without Zion Williamson or Brandon Ingram.
While the Nets can only play who lines up across from them what occurred in this game was a sign the Nets are growing and learning how to win when their offense isn’t clicking or in this case — winning ugly.
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving combined to shoot 16 of 48 scoring a cumulative 52 points. And while the superstars weren’t shooting well the team was hot from the perimeter shooting 45.5% (15-33) which was the difference in the game.
Brooklyn allows 110.8 points per game ranking sixth and possesses the third-best opponent field goal percentage of 45.3%. Their perimeter defense has been troublesome all season with teams shooting 36.6% ranking 25th overall.
Brooklyn scores 114.9 points per game (13th). They own the best percentage from the field shooting 51.2% and rank second from the perimeter shooting (39.3%).
Miami Heat
Victor Oladipo single-handedly outscored the Suns’ bench (26-25) in the victory on Friday.
While Jimmy Butler (20 points, five rebounds, six assists, two steals) and Bam Adebayo (21 points, 11 rebounds) led the starting unit, Dipo’s performance was the x-factor in the victory.
Offensively, the Heat score 108.9 points per game (30th rank) and rank 26th for both field goal shooting 45.3% and from the perimeter shooting 33.9%.
Defensively, the Heat possesses the second-best ranking for opponent scoring allowing 109.1 points per game. Miami opponents shoot 47.5% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking 20th and 27th respectively.
Tyler Herro (back) and Caleb Martin (ankle) are questionable for Sunday. Duncan Robinson (finger) Nikola Jovic (back), and Omer Yurtseven (ankle surgery) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games.
- The Heat are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Nets are 6-2-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Miami.
- The Heat are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games at home.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
While the Nets have undeniable talents I keep returning to their schedule and the good fortune of playing teams without their stars available.
In addition to the Pels game, Brooklyn faced the Clippers (Kawhi), Grizzlies (Big 3), Blazers (Lillard), and Warriors (Steph and Klay) without their primary star(s).
Considering they hover around .500 (11-10) versus teams with winning records there’s a plausible argument several of those wins could’ve just as easily been losses had they faced the A-Team (Pels/Grizz routed the Nets with stars in the lineup).
It might not equate to a 6-15 record against that group, but it may speak to the Nets’ record being skewed by circumstance.
As for the Heat, the emergence of Oladipo could prove to be the offensive key they need to push them over the top albeit they still need more size and depth.
Expect Miami to play KD aggressively (something he’s not overly fond of) which should make for a tightly contested game.
