Monday, December 26th the Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers meet for the first of three scheduled meetings. Brooklyn will host a baseball set on March 21st and 23rd.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Nets extending their win streak to eight via a 118-100 defeat of the Bucks while the Cavaliers lost at home for just the third time this season falling 107-118 to the Raptors.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Nets coming out on top in three of the four contests. The Cavaliers hold the all-time record having bested the Net in 105 of their 188 matches.

Brooklyn Nets
It’s hard to fully invest in this Brooklyn Nets team given all the off-court issues the team has produced. Hey, if you aren’t waiting for the other shoe to drop then you haven’t paid attention to the dynamics in Brooklyn.
That said, Kevin Durant has his team rolling with the longest current win streak (8 games in a row) so it’s a little surprising they aren’t favored entering this match.
Admittedly, I didn’t expect the Nets to dominate their match Friday versus the Bucks. Granted, Khris Middleton was out, but Milwaukee had Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday, and Brook Lopez.
That triumvirate should’ve been more than enough to keep the game close if not get an outright win. Instead, it was the Nets who pounced on the Bucks taking a 13-point lead into the half and never let Milwaukee get close.
I’m still not convinced their defense pushes them up into the upper echelon with the Bucks and Celtics but their offense has been lethal and Durant is putting up ridiculously efficient performances.
During the win streak (he missed the match versus the Pacers) he’s averaging 30.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 59.8% from the field (18.9 attempts), 42.9% from deep (5.0 attempts), and 97.4% from the line (5.6 attempts).
Brooklyn allows 111.1 points per game ranking ninth and possesses the sixth-best opponent field goal percentage of 45.5%. Their perimeter defense is another story as foes shoot 37.1% from deep ranking 27th overall.
Brooklyn scores 114.1 points per game (15th). They own the best field goal percentage, shooting 50.8%, and rank third on the perimeter (38.4%).
Joe Harris (knee) is questionable for Monday.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Donovan Mitchell will be praying at season end they don’t face the Raptors in the first round or more specifically have to line up across from OG Anunoby.
Although he had a decent showing (31 points) in the season opener he’s struggled in the last two matches scoring eight points on 3 of 11 from the field (1 of 5 from deep) and 12 points on 4 of 16 from the field (3 of 12 from deep).
That’s well off his season averages of 28.9 points, shooting 49.7 percent from the field on 20.3 attempts, 42.8 percent from deep on 9.2 attempts, and 88 percent from the line on 5.6 attempts.
Offensively, Cleveland scores 110.9 points per game ranking 24th while shooting 48.0% from the field and 36.7% on the perimeter ranking seventh and 13th respectively.
Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 104.9 points per game. Cavs opponents shoot 45.5% from the field and 35.2% from deep which ranks fifth and 11th respectively.
Dean Wade (shoulder) is questionable for Monday. Dylan Windler (ankle), and Ricky Rubio (ACL surgery) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Cavaliers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games when hosting Brooklyn.
- The Nets are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games on the road.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Brooklyn’s last 8 games.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
Cleveland hadn’t lost to an Eastern team at home until Friday when Toronto broke that trend. I presume the oddsmakers are crediting the Cavs home prowess but are they underestimating the Nets’ lethal offense?
To that end, I’ll take the points and the Nets to keep it close and possibly make it two Eastern opponents winning at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in a row.
