Saturday, January 7th, the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs play the first of two meetings between these clubs. Boston will host the second contest on March 26th.
The Celtics are finishing a four-game road trip having last played Thursday thumping the Mavericks 124-95 while the Spurs are completing a back-to-back set with the Pistons on tap Friday.
Last season the clubs played twice with San Antonio winning both contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 58 wins in 99 matches versus the Celtics.

It’s been an up-and-down week for the Celtics who gave up 150 points to the young Thunder without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the court and then followed up that embarrassment by taking out their angst on the Mavericks pounding them by almost 30 points.
Tatum averages 30.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. with shooting splits of 47.1% from the field (21.3), 34.6% from the perimeter (9.1), and 86.0% from the charity stripe (8.7). *note attempts are in brackets
Boston possesses the best point production average with 118.7 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.8% from the field and 37.2% from the perimeter ranking 11th and eighth respectively.
Defensively, opponents average 112.9 points per game which rank 15th overall. Opponents are limited to 46.9% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter which ranks 14th and 15th respectively.
Danilo Gallinari (ACL) is out for the season.
San Antonio Spurs
December was good to the Spurs who collected half of their total wins this month. They’ve switched back to the losing side of the column though with three consecutive losses almost as if someone whispered in their ears — hang on we need to lose for Wemby.
On offense, the Spurs average 111.7 points per game ranking 23rd overall. San Antonio shoots 47.1 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from the perimeter ranking 15th and 18th respectively.
While the Spurs struggle to score the larger issue lies on the defensive side of the hardware with them ranking 30th in all three defensive categories allowing 120.9 opponent points per game 50.6% field goal percentage and 39.3% perimeter percentage.
As of 1:14 pm Saturday, the Spurs have still not provided an update to the official NBA injury report so I’m using a secondary source that only lists Devin Vassell (knee) as out indefinitely.

The Celtics need to win this game to come back with a split from the road trip where they already lost to the Nuggets and Thunder.
Boston gains the rest advantage but it’s doubtful they’ll need advantages or incentives to take care of business early as they’re still feeling the embarrassment of that loss in OKC. And, while I don’t typically go for the huge spreads in this case I’m making an exception.
