Monday, January 23rd, the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic play for the fourth and final time this season.
Surprisingly the Magic leads this series sweeping the baseball set on December 16th (117-109) and 18th (95-92) while Boston won the initial contest on October 22nd (126-120).
Both teams last played on Saturday with the shorthanded Celtics defeating the Raptors 106-104 while the Magic got pummeled 118-138 by the Wizards.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Celtics sweeping the regular-season series. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 73 of their 126 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Sunday, evening, January 22nd. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Monday, January 23rd.
Boston Celtics
Based on how the Celtics were dropping in Toronto, Jayson Tatum was wise to sit this one out. Marcus Smart tweaked his ankle and needed to be helped to the locker room.
Jaylen Brown fell backward into Robert Williams’s knee causing a hyperextension and he also didn’t return in the second half.
Grant Williams briefly hit the court but seemed to shake it off, and Derrick White tweaked his knee in the fourth causing him to sit but wasn’t serious.
On the opposite side, OG Anunoby jammed his ankle and also didn’t return in the second half.
Based on how the game ended Nikola Jokic’s post-game thoughts from this past week kept resonating in my mind:
“I think the good teams win even when they play bad, and bad teams always find a way to lose games, even when they’re up.”
The game in Toronto epitomized that quote.
Stats
Boston claims the second-best point production averaging 118.5 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.5% from the field and 37.1% from the perimeter ranking 12th and eighth respectively.
Opponents average 112.2 points per game which ranked 10th. Celtics opponents are limited to 46.9 percent from the field and 35.6% from the perimeter which ranks 12th and 13th respectively.
Williams (knee) is questionable while Smart (ankle) and Malcolm Brogdon (personal) are out Monday. Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair) is out indefinitely.
Orlando Magic
Although the Magic are considered one of the tanking teams they’ve been flirting with winning enough to make the play-in tournament and are still within striking distance of doing that.
The big news in Orlando is Jonathan Isaac returned from his stint with their G League team where he got some run to get conditioning but Jamahl Mosley hasn’t put him into game action yet.
Presumably, he’s part of the future otherwise you’d think they’d feature him to drum up trade interest. This leads to the bigger question – – whether Orlando is taking their sweet time bringing him back because Isaac would make them too good to tank.
Defense
Defensively, Orlando holds their opponents to 114.7 points per game ranking 17th. The Magic allow opponents to shoot 47.4% from the field ranking 17th and foes shoot 34.4% from the perimeter ranking third best overall.
Offensively, the Magic scores 110.9 points per game ranking 27th while shooting 47.0% from the field and 34.8% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 22nd respectively.
Jonathan Isaac (knee) is questionable while Chuma Okeke, Chuma (knee surgery) are out indefinitely.

Free Boston Celtics vs. Orlando Magic NBA Prediction:
Since he’s no longer on the injury report Tatum should be playing but he and Jaylen Brown will need to carry the team as Smart and Brogdon are definitely out while Williams is an uncertainty.
Normally that wouldn’t be a big deal but this Magic squad marched into Boston and swept the baseball set.
They may still be invested in tanking — but even if they only collect two more wins in the second half you can bet they’d love for them to be against the best team in the association.
Conversely, the Celtics will be eager to make their own point to a team who’ll be challenging them in the future.
