Sunday, December 27th finds the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers playing each other for the first time in the 2020-21 season.
The Celtics hold the all-time record between the clubs with 99 wins in 179 meetings. Last season, due to the pandemic the clubs only played twice with each team winning one of the contests.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics have played two very competitive matches against two of the teams expected to vie for the top of the Conference and potentially the NBA title.
A bank shot by Jayson Tatum led to a victory over the Bucks and while the Celtics battled on Christmas Day they eventually succumbed to the offensive juggernaut of the Nets.
For as much as the loss to Brooklyn exposed their weaknesses it’s important to note the Celtics were missing Kemba Walker and are integrating new players.
In the loss to the Nets it was the Celtics who held the half-time lead but with only three Celtics scoring in double-digits Boston conceeding in the third quarter.
The pressure the Nets put on opponent defenses uses up so much energy that even one player having a sub par offensive night is enough to tilt the arrow.
Jaylen Brown led the way with 27 points and eight rebounds while Jayson Tatum added 20 points and his own eight rebounds. Marcus Smart did his best to be a pest defensively and pitched in 13 points as the only other double-figure scorer.
The starting bigs didn’t bring much offense as Tristan Thompson offered eight points and Daniel Theis chipped in with just two points.
Speaking of big men each of Robert Williams (illness) and Tacko Fall (eye) missed the Christmas game and are questionable for Sunday.
Kemba Walker (knee) remains out with no set return date while Romeo Langford (wrist) will be out until late January.
Indiana Pacers
New head coach Nate Bjorkgren has his Indiana Pacers playing with energy and confidence on both sides of the court which was punctuated in their 125-106 victory over the Bulls on Saturday.
Domantas Sabonis deliverd a triple-double of 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. Indiana’s other stars did their part with Victor Oladipo adding 22 points and seven rebounds while T.J. Warren scored 23 and chipped in with six boards.
Malcolm Brogdan added 18 points with six assists while Doug McDermott added 12 pionts
Edmond Sumner (illness) and Brian Bowen 11 (ankle) are both questionable for Sunday.
Goga Bitadze has a grade two ankle sprain that will keep him off the court for the forseeable future. Jeremy Lamb who suffered a torn ACL last season is expected back mid-January.
