The Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons play their second match in three days as the teams entertain fans with a matinee match on Sunday, January 3rd.
The teams have played 380 matches all-time with the Celtics winning 242 of those contests. Last season the teams played twice with the Celtics taking the December 20th match 114-93 while the Pistons won the January 15th match 116-103.
Boston Celtics
After facing some of the association’s toughest teams the consecutive games in Detroit appeared to be an opportunity for the Celtics to pick up two easy victories. Unfortunately, the Pistons had extra motivation to post their first victory of the season and Boston became the team to cough up that “W”.
The young star combo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown tried to carry the Celtics on their backs keeping the game close but failed to get th Bean Town crew over the hump succumbing to the Pistons.
Tatum led the way with 28 points, six rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block while Brown posted 25 points, nine rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks. Brown was everywhere on the hardwood but wasn’t able to hit the game=tying 3-pointer to send the match to overtime.
Marcus Smart scored 13 points while Jeff Teague chipped in with 12 points as the only other double-figure contributors.
Javonte Green (illness) is out Sunday. Kemba Walker (knee) and Romeo Langford (wrist) are out indefinitely.
Detroit Pistons
Having started the season 0-4 the Pistons were due to breakthrough and did so by hanging on for a 96-93 victory over the Celtics.
Leading the majority of the game the Pistons coughed up the lead late in the fourth quarter taking a 93-88 lead but then Detroit locked down defensively and held Boston scoreless through the final 4:15 of the final frame to capture their first “W”.
Saddiq Bey replaced the ailing Blake Griffin in the starting rotation and his perimeter shooting offered the Pistons extra floor spacing as he drilled five 3-pointers on route to a 17 point performance.
Jerami Grant led the way for his club with 24 points, four rebounds, and a steal. Rose pitched in 17 and Josh Jackson offered 11 points as the only other double-figure contributors.
Griffin is in the concussion protocol program and his progress through it will determine if he’ll be available Sunday. Frank Jackson (personal), Jahlil Okafor missed the past three games with an ankle sprain as both are listed as questionable for Sunday.
Deividas Sirvydis is out indefinitely undergoing the league COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
