The NBA has a full slate of matches on New Year Day including the Detroit Pistons who’ll host the Boston Celtics.
The teams have played 379 matches all-time with the Celtics winning 242 of those contests. Last season the teams played twice with the Celtics taking the December 20th match 114-93 while the Pistons won the January 15th match 116-103.
Boston Celtics
The schedule was rough for the Celtics season start and as such their wins and losses are almost identical with one victory coming off a lucky 3-point bank shot by Jayson Tatum over the Bucks.
In their most recent victory, the schedule shifted with the Celtics facing a young Grizzlies squad missing both Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson. The result was an easy 126-107 oust.
Jaylen Brown broke out with a massive 42-point performance featuring seven 3-pointers in his career-best scoring effort. He added five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. After uncertainty about his presence due to a thumb injury, Tatum played and contributed 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Marcus Smart scored 14 points while Daniel Theis chipped in 12 points as the only other double-figure contributors. Tacko Fall who had been sidelined by an eye injury saw his first action of the season playing the final six minutes of the contest.
Javonte Green is undergoing the league health and safety protocols which caused him to miss the last game and will keep his status questionable for Friday. Kemba Walker (knee) and Romeo Langford (wrist) are out indefinitely.
Detroit Pistons
Although the Pistons are winless through four games none of them have come via massive blowouts. Detroit held the lead 29-24 after the first quarter and was ahead by 89-86 in the final frame before allowing a 12-0 run by the Warriors as they succumbed.
Blake Griffin played only 17 minutes for a concussion and this is in addition to the ailing knee which kept him out of an earlier game. Meanwhile, rookie Killian Hayes suffered an ankle sprain sending him out of the game.
Jerami Grant has seemingly stepped up as the primary for the Pistons and led his team in the loss to Golden State. Grant offered 27 points, seven rebounds, an assist, three steals, and two blocks.
Josh Jackson (17), Derrick Rose (15), and Saddiq Bey (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Griffin is in the concussion protocol program and his progress through it will determine if he’ll be available Friday.
Hayes ankle will be evaluated daily while Jahlil Okafor missed the past two games also for an ankle sprain. Deividas Sirvydis hasn’t played in the regular season as he undergoes the league COVID-19 health and safety protocols. All three are listed as questionable for Friday.

Free Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction:
While the logical thinking is this should be an easy victory for the Celtics the 9.5 spread might be generous given how closely the Pistons have played each opponent.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Pistons +9.5
Will the Celtics elect to rest Tatum given his thumb and the opponent? That could factor but the Celtics still have too much talent to drop this unless they fail to bring effort. The latter is unlikely given a loss would push the Celtics to .500 in the standings.
