Thursday, January 5th features the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks playing for the second and final time this season. Boston won the initial meeting 125-112 on November 23rd.
The Celtics arrive on the heels of their absolute worst loss of the season to an OKC Thunder squad who didn’t have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the lineup but dropped 150 points (to 117) on Boston. The Mavericks last played Monday defeating the Rockets 111-106.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Mavericks sweeping the regular-season series and currently owning a four-game win streak versus Boston. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 43 of their 83 matches.

Boston Celtics
When teams learn a top player(s) won’t be on the floor for an opponent they may not ever intend to but subconsciously they relax. And while that was likely the case in the opening quarter at OKC they were only trailing by a single point entering the second.
Instead, the Celtics allowed OKC to score 40 points in the second and 48 in the third. The third quarter was true to the Thunder identity as they rank second for points scored in that frame, but the Celtics aren’t far behind ranking fifth.
Ultimately, it was one of those nights that fit into the box of fives (win five games you should lose, lose five games you should win, blow out teams five times, get blown out five times).
The most concerning part of the loss was the lack of scoring outside of the two stars. Jaylen Brown led the way with 29 points while Jayson Tatum scored 27.
Two other Celtics reached double-figure scoring but notably, Payton Pritchard scored 15 of his 17 points in the fourth while Malcolm Brogdon scored 10 of his 17 from late in the third (2:06) forward.
Frankly, the Thunder were so far ahead of the Celtics that it was as if Boston was playing blindfolded as the Thunder systematically shut them down defensively and exploited them offensively.
Dallas Mavericks
It’s not breaking news that 23-year-old Luka Doncic is a basketball savant and one of a handful of young talents poised to take over the LeBron James mantel as the best in the league.
Still, what he’s been doing through the seven-game winning streak is mind-boggling! He’s averaging 41.7 points, 11 rebounds, 9.9 assists, and 2.3 steals.
The totals are morphing his season averages of 34.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 8.9 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Doncic is shooting 50.7% from the field (22.8 attempts), 35.9% from the perimeter (8.2 attempts), and 74% from the stripe (11.2 attempts).
Dorian Finney-Smith (right adductor strain), Josh Green (elbow sprain), and Maxi Kleber (hamstring tear) are all out.

This match serves two side agendas with the Tatum versus Doncic MVP argument and whether the deep Celtics are dramatically better than the thin Mavericks who rely so heavily on their superstar.
