Thursday, January 12th, the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets meet for the second of four scheduled matches. Boston won the initial meeting on December 4th (103-92) and will host the next two meetings on February 1st and March 3rd.
Brooklyn last played Sunday edging out the Heat 102-101 while the Celtics are playing a back-to-back facing the Pelicans on the front side on Wednesday.
Boston holds the all-time advantage having won 134 times of the club’s 207 meetings, last year the teams played four times with the Celtics winning three of the four contests.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Wednesday, evening, January 11th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, January 12th.
Boston Celtics
Despite facing adversity the Celtics have managed to keep the top seed in both the Eastern Conference and league-wide.
They’ve been tested lately but this week had the potential to serve up one of their toughest weeks with a back-to-back versus the Pels and Nets but injuries to the superstars on both clubs is a fortunate break for Boston.
That’s important since the Nets have the decided rest advantage which Boston has only faced three prior times but the good news is they are 6-0 in the second games of back-to-back sets.
Stats
Boston possesses the second-best point production averaging 118.5 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.8% from the field and 37.1% from the perimeter ranking 11th and eighth respectively.
Slowly but surely, the Celtics’ defensive stats are improving with the club ranking 13th in all three defensive categories. Specifically, opponents average 112.6 points per game while shooting 46.9% from the field and 35.5% from the perimeter which rank 14th and 13th respectively.
Marcus Smart (knee) and Robert Williams III (knee) were out Wednesday and since this post is going up before that game finishes let’s assume they’ll at least be questionable for Thursday. Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair) is out indefinitely.
Brooklyn Nets
While the offseason drama of Kevin Durant’s trade request and Kyrie Irving’s early season off-court actions derailed the Nets early, since the latter’s return from suspension, things have been relatively quiet (off the court at least).
Irving has played in 22 of the Nets’ 24 games since returning with Brooklyn posting a 20-4 record in that period. Consequently, one of those losses was against the Celtics who they trailed by 1.5 games prior to Wednesday’s matches.
Injury News
Suddenly things could get very interesting for the Nets with Kevin Durant learning he’ll miss significant time (noted out until mid-February) after suffering a sprained MCL.
Last season, he missed five weeks with a similar injury but the team notes this injury isn’t as serious.
Brooklyn allows 110.6 points per game ranking fifth and possesses the fourth-best opponent field goal percentage of 45.2%. Their perimeter defense is another story as foes shoot 36.6% from deep ranking 27th overall.
Brooklyn scores 114.6 points per game (14th). They own the best field goal percentage, shooting 51.2%, and rank second on the perimeter (39.2%).
Durant (knee) is listed as out until mid-February.

Free Boston Celtics vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
For as impressive as the Nets have been their record versus teams with .500 or better records is 9-10. Moreover, four victories occurred versus teams missing their star(s) and another was with a major rest advantage.
It’s not that they can’t beat the good teams, but rather that they’ve seldom been tested with the opponents’ best lineups.
