Saturday, January 14th, the Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors meet for the third and final time this season.
The Raptors routed the Hawks 139-109 in the initial meeting on October 31st while the Hawks won 124-122 via a clutch time inbound pass to rookie AJ Griffin on November 19th.
Toronto won 124-114 versus the Hornets on Thursday while the Hawks are playing the Pacers on Friday is a back-to-back set (update: Atlanta won 113-111).
Also, last season, the Raptors won three of the four contests against Atlanta and own the all-time record of 51 wins in 101 meetings.

Atlanta Hawks
Like their opponent, the Hawks had much higher expectations for this campaign.
The main difference, however, is Atlanta made a major roster change to upgrade the overall talent with the addition of Dejounte Murray.
The hope was Murray would augment the Hawks’ defense, particularly to help Trae Young who was the frequent target of opponent guards given his defensive shortcomings.
Additionally, the belief was another playmaker would open up the court for Young to play more off ball and capitalize on his shooting prowess.
Offense
Unfortunately, Young didn’t get the memo — his usage rate is down less than a percentage point (34.4% – 33.7%), his 3-point shooting is the worst of his career (31.4%) and he’s feuding with head coach Nate McMillan.
At any rate, punctuating how ineffectual the shift has been, the Hawks’ second-ranked offense of last season has plummeted to 22nd this year.
Atlanta ranks 11th in scoring, averaging 115.0 points per game while they shoot 46.8%, from the field and 33.2% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 27th respectively
Also, on defense, opponents score 116.3 points ranking 22nd while foes register 47.4% field goal percentage and 34.6% perimeter percentage ranking 20th and seventh respectively.
Another key point, Clint Capela (calf) was out Friday and likely won’t play Saturday.
Toronto Raptors
There were positives to take from the Raptors baseball set sweep of the Hornets as they broke through winning three games in a row for the first time this season.
Tempering any urge to overreact by thinking the Raptors have fixed all that ails them would be wise given the Hornets are last in the East with the second-worst record in the NBA!
By the same token, Nick Nurse used this season-high six-game home stand to capitalize on practice time to tweak issues.
Testing system tweaks
Accordingly, more playmaking responsibility was shifted to Scottie Barnes which paid immediate dividends. Additionally, the return and reintegration of Precious Achiuwa has helped bolster bench production.
But, the true test of how effective those adjustments were will be answered on the road where they’ll be for 10 of their next 13 matches including a seven-game Western trip.
On offense, the Raptors score 112.0 points per game (24th) shooting 44.9% from the field (29th) and 33.0% from deep (29th). Defensively, the Raptors allow 111.5 opponent points per game ranking (10th) while shooting 48.8% (27th) from the field and 36.6% (26th).
Additionally, Otto Porter Jr., had season-ending toe surgery.

Atlanta is 1-4 in the second game of back-to-backs — and is up early (40-29 as of posting) versus the Pacers. [Update: Atlanta won 113-111 Friday, Collins (27) was the only starter who logged under 30 mins the other four played 34 to 39 minutes.]
Also, Toronto hasn’t exactly feasted on teams when they’ve had the rest advantage but I’m inclined to believe they’ll perform better given the recent success on the home court.
That said, if Atlanta can maintain their early lead it’ll afford them the opportunity to keep the core’s minutes to a minimum.
All in all, I still think Toronto wins, but this is one of those cases where a half-point is the difference in why I’ll take the points.
