Saturday, January 16th finds the Atlanta Hawks playing the Portland Trail Blazers in the clubs first meeting this season.
In an oddity, the teams each won 58 times in their 116 meetings all-time. Last season, the clubs split their two meetings.
Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young had a rough night at the office shooting 1 of 11 for four points and dished seven assists as the Hawks fell 92-116 to the Jazz. It was their fifth loss in the last six games.
The Hawks drama has leaked out of the locker room. First, John Collins complained about the way Young runs the offense.
Then Young’s father liked a tweet suggesting a coaching replacing for Lloyd Pierce. It’s not a great look for Young and you have to wonder how it’s affecting the club.
Worse, the offseason acquisitions to bolster depth have spent the majority of their tenure on the injured reserve list with only Rajon Rondo available, and only recently back.
In the loss to the Jazz, the Hawks defense got exposed repeatedly exposed. Trae Young was aggressively defended and attacked when Atlanta was on defense.
Rookie Onyeka Okongwu made his debut for the Hawks but was limited to four points. Cam Reddish led the scoring with 20 points while Clint Capella posted a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
De’Andre Hunter (14), John Collins (13), and Kevin Huerter were the other double-figure scorers.
Danilo Gallinari (ankle) is projected to be out until month end. Kris Dunn (ankle) and Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee fractue) are out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
The last five games for the Blazers has served up a four game win streak with three blowouts and a one-point win prior to the Indiana Pacers halting the streak.
Indiana took advantage of the Blazers playing the second game of a back-to-back set and third game in four nights blowing out Portland 111-87.
That loss was costly as Jusuf Nurkic broke his wrist thinning out the Blazers frontcourt even further as he joins Zach Collins on the injured list and both will miss significant time.
Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum each scored 22 points to lead the Blazers while Carmelo Anthony was the only other double-figure scorer with 10 points.
Keljin Blevins (personal) missed the last two games and is questionable for Saturday. Nurkic (fractured wrist) will be out until mid-March while Zach Collins is out indefinitely after undergoing another ankle surgery.
