Tuesday, December 17 serves up the first meeting between two Eastern Conference lottery teams as the Atlanta Hawks hit Madison Square Garden to play the New York Knicks.
Last season, the squads played four times with the New York Knicks taking three of the four games. The Hawks holds the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 196 of their 374 matches

The Hawks have two wins in their last 17 games which came against the Warriors and Hornets. Given their opponent is the Knicks who also sport a 6-20 record generally that should be good news.

But the Knicks have won two of four games and are looking improved since the return of Elfrid Payton.
Trae Young may never make another ‘in game’ declaration again based on what has happened since he bragged to the Miami crowd ‘it’s over” and then the Heat came back to win in overtime.
The Hawks have looked terrible at times this season but Young has looked his worst since that Miami game. His perimeter shooting last week (including the Heat game) is 10 for 38 or 26.3 percent.
Atlanta did stay competitive in the loss to the Lakers, however, that had more to do with LA missing wide-open shots than the Hawks defense holding them at bay.
Four Hawks delivered double-digit efforts with Young scoring 30. The trio of Jabari Parker (12), Damian Jones (10) and Cam Reddish (10) were the other double-digit contributors.
On the season the Hawks leaders are Young for points (27.8) and assists (8.5). Parker tops rebounds (6.3), field goal percent (50.6) and steals (1.4) and Damian Jones leads for blocks (0.9).
Young tweaked his ankle but is listed as probable. Kevin Huerter (shoulder contusion) missed the last game and is questionable. John Collins will finish his suspension and be eligible to return to the lineup on December 23.
New York Knicks
Surprise – surprise the Knicks won two of their last four games. Must be the coach right? Or — could it be the return of Elfrid Payton who is happy to run an actual offense and his quarterbacking is paying dividends.
Meanwhile, Dennis Smith Jr. is seemingly relegated to the third-string and a good bet would be Steve Mills is trying to find a trade partner.
In their last outing, the Knicks hung in tight with the Denver Nuggets eventually succumbing 111-105. In the loss five Knicks delivered with veteran big men Marcus Morris Sr. (22) and Julius Randle (20) leading the way.
Frank Ntilikina (13), Kevin Knox (10) and Elfrid Payton came close to collecting a triple-double with 10 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds.
On the season Marcus Morris Sr. is the leading scorer (19.3), Julius Randle tops assists (3.8), rebounds (9.1) and field goal percentage (44.4%) while Frank Ntilikina (1.6) tops steals and Mitchell Robinson is the master of blocks (2.1).
Smith Jr. (illness) is probable after missing the last three games. Allonzo Trier (concussion) missed last two games, Wayne Ellington (sore Achilles) missed the last five games and both are out Tuesday.
Reggie Bullock (neck) has yet to make his Knicks debut but should by the end of the month.
