Hawks vs. Heat Gameday
It’s the closing day of the regular season with every team in action, including the Atlanta Hawks in town to face the Miami Heat. Both clubs last played on Friday.
Atlanta got lucky when the Cavaliers rested core members, helping them secure a 124-102 victory (while the Knicks played their core to beat Toronto). Five Hawks scored in double figures, led by CJ McCollum with 29 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Jalen Johnson delivered another triple-double featuring 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists.
Miami took down the hapless Wizards 140-117. Eight Heat players collected double-figure scores, with Simone Fontecchio and Pelle Larsson leading the way, scoring 24 points apiece.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat Odds & Last 5
Last year, the teams split the season series, each winning two games. This is the fourth and final meeting this season, with Miami leading the series 2-1.
Atlanta has vaulted to the fifth seed with a 46-35 record. The Hawks have been on fire, winning 19 of 23 contests. They have cemented a playoff berth and can finish no worse than sixth.
Miami sits in the 10th seed, a game back of the Hornets. They can finish as high as ninth and no worse than 10th, so they are guaranteed to be in the play-in tournament.
Miami is favored to win by 3.5 points with an over/under of 242.5 points.

The East’s fifth seed averages 118.5 points per game, while their opponents average 115.7 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Atlanta averages 30.2 (first) and 43.5 (17th), respectively.

Atlanta Heat vs. Miami Heat bottom line:
As noted, the Hawks have cemented a playoff berth; the only question is whether they’ll be the fifth seed or the sixth seed. A win versus the Heat and they lock up the fifth seed. A loss becomes more complicated as they might still be fifth unless the Raptors win (which seems likely as they play the Nets).
Miami has cemented a play-in berth and can either finish 10th or ninth. A loss secures them in 10th, but a win could allow them to finish ninth IF Charlotte also loses (the Heat hold that tiebreaker).

Hawks Heat Free Pick: Heat -3.5
Here is my Hawks Heat free pick.
These are two of the fastest teams in the association, who also each excel from behind the arc. Therefore, pace should be a major factor with the top-ranked squad (Miami) versus the sixth-ranked Hawks.
Perhaps the big difference will occur in the paint with the Heat holding a decided advantage over Atlanta. To wit, the Heat rank fourth on the glass while the Hawks are 17th.
Per John Schuhmann: The opponents’ scoring numbers are affected by the pace the Heat play at, but they’ve allowed 130.5 points per 100 possessions over their last five games, their worst stretch of defense this season. That has them outside the top 10 on defense for what would be just the second time in the last 11 years.
Miami looked terrible against the Raptors, losing both matches this week, but got back on track with the win versus Washington. Still, you have to ask if they’re up for a match against the Hawks, who’ve been red hot.
A closer examination of the Hawks’ recent performances shows they are susceptible to the higher-seeded clubs, but is Miami in that spectrum? Not really, yet at home, they perform much better (25-25) than they do on the road (17-24). So on a day when both clubs are keen to collect the ‘W’ that might be the simple edge they need.
With that, I’ll roll the dice on the Heat and Erik Spoelstra to give Miami the x-factor they need, so take the Heat to win and cover.
