Saturday, December 26 finds the Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies playing in a Boxing Day match.
The Hawks hold the all-time record between the clubs with 29 wins in 48 meetings. Last season, the clubs played twice in March with the Grizzlies winning both matches.
In the first meeting on March 2nd, the Grizzlies hammered the Hawks in Atlanta 127-88 and then won again at home on March 7th by a score of 118-101.
The teams also played twice in the preseason with the Grizzlies winning the December 17th contest 128-106 while the Hawks outlasted Memphis on December 19th 117-116.
Atlanta Hawks
While the Hawks split their preseason matches they seemed to struggle, losing badly to the Grizzlies in their first meeting. But as many preseason games fail to show teams are often figuring out the kinks.
That certainly seemed to be the case for the revamped Hawks who easily trounced the Bulls in their season opener 124-104.
Trae Young had one heck of a season opener with 37 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. What made his performance stand out was the efficiency he scored with going 10 of 12 from the field, 5 of 6 from deep, and 12 of 14 from the line.
Young cited the spacing as the reason for the Hawks offensive assault which featured seven Hawks reaching double-figure scoring.
Coach Lloyd Pierce put Danilo Gallinari in the starting lineup which made more sense than paying him $20 million to come off the bench.
The resulting effect was that floor spacing Young spoke of. The other big free agent acquisition Bogdan Bogdanovic came off the bench and delivered 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Kris Dunn (knee), Clint Capela (sore left Achilles), Rajon Rondo (COVID-19 protocols), Tony Snell (foot), and rookie Onyeka Okongwu (foot) all missed the opening game and are questionable again.
Memphis Grizzlies
Unlike the Hawks, the Grizzlies failed to win their opening night match falling to the San Antonio Spurs 131-119. It was a difficult loss given how special reigning Rookie of Year Ja Morant was.
Morant delivered a 44 point, nine assist two rebound effort but failed to get enough support to capture the victory.
Jonas Valanciunas delivered a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds while Dillon Brooks (16) and Brandon Clarke (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
In the opening match, the Grizzlies were without all three rookies Killian Tillie (hamstring), Xavier Tillman (knee), and Jontay Porter (knee) as well as Justise Winslow (hip) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee).
All are listed as questionable for Saturday, except Jackson who’ll be out indefinitely.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
The Hawks sure could use Kris Dunn to guard Morant and they’ll need to figure out how to stop Valanciunas who has feasted on them. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies will need to find an answer to stop Young, Bogdanovic, and the bigs who space the floor.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Morant takes charge – Grizzlies plus point
While the Hawks looked sharp in their opener they haven’t had an answer for JV and without Dunn available to guard an inspired Morant the Grizzlies get the nod.
