On Monday, December 12th, the Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies meet for the first of two scheduled matches. Atlanta will host on March 26th.
Atlanta is completing a back-to-back set outlasting the Bulls 123-122 in overtime on Sunday while the Grizzlies defeated the Pistons 114-103 on Friday.
Last season, the teams played twice with Atlanta winning both contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 32 of their 52 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
The struggle in Atlanta may be happening off the court more than on it. Granted the Hawks have lost six of their last nine games and ended a three-game losing streak with their win versus the Bulls on Sunday.
The main issue lies with the relationship between head coach Nate McMillan and superstar Trae Young. The fifth-year guard is averaging 27.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 9.5 assists per game.
Young is having his worst shooting season to date attempting 21.7 field goals per game making 9.0 for an efficiency of 41.3 percent and on the perimeter attempts 7.2 shots connecting at 28.9 percent. Both are career lows.
Word on the street is Young requested more help after failing to get back to the Conference Finals last season so the team traded for Dejounte Murray to help share Young’s load of playmaking and scoring and to increase their defensive guard abilities.
But his presence hasn’t equated to what the team envisioned. To wit, Young’s shot attempts are up (+1.4), his assist percentage is the lowest since his rookie season but his usage rate is identical to last year (34.4%).
Atlanta ranks 14th in scoring averaging 113.2 points per game, 18th from the field shooting 46.5%, and 29th from the perimeter: 32.1%.
On defense, opponents score 113.8 points (18th), 46.9% field goal percentage (15th), and 34.0% perimeter percentage (5th).
De’Andre Hunter (thigh) and Onyeka Okongwu (foot) returned Sunday but since the injury report hasn’t been submitted as of posting it’s not a given they’ll play Monday given the B2B scenario. Dejounte Murray (ankle) and John Collins (ankle) are out indefinitely.
Memphis Grizzlies
In contrast to the issues in Atlanta, the Grizzlies appear to be a very bonded group and have navigated various injuries, seemingly getting stronger as the season progresses.
Ja Morant remains the cornerstone but is happy to share the spotlight with all his teammates. The superstar is averaging 27.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 1.2 steals.
He’s attempting 21 field goals per game, 5.0 perimeter shots, and 9.0 free throws shooting 45.8%, 35.5%, and 74.2% respectively. Although his usage rate has increased (35.7%) so too has his assist percentage (39.8%).
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.0 points per game ranking 10th overall. Memphis shoots 46.3% from the field ranking 20th, and 35.8% from the perimeter ranking 15th.
Defensively, Memphis allow their opponents to score 112.0 points per game (12th). Opponents shoot 45.5% from the field (5th) and 36.0% from deep (18th).
Ja Morant (thigh soreness), Jake LaRavia (foot), and Steven Adams (ankle) are questionable. Desmond Bane (toe) and Danny Green (knee) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Hawks are 9-27 ATS in their last 36 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Grizzlies are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- Hawks are 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Memphis.
- Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 2 days’ rest.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
I’d lean in fully to the Grizzlies winning and covering but the injury report caused me to pause slightly given Morant, Adams, and LaRavia could be out and the team is already missing Bane.
Even with that possibility, the reality is the Hawks are inconsistent and have the rest disadvantage plus Memphis is clicking on both ends recently riding a five-game win streak (and seven of eight) so I’m going with my original gut instinct that the Grizz will win and cover.
