Wednesday, December 29th, finds the Atlanta Hawks facing the Chicago Bulls finishing a home and home set with the Bulls taking the initial match 130-118 on Monday.
Last season, the teams played on three occasions with the Hawks sweeping the regular-season series. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Bulls in 132 of their 248 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
Like many teams in the association the Hawks have dealt with players entering health and safety protocols but with the highly contagious omicron variant raging Atlanta is witnessing their worst attack from the virus.
It speaks to the depth of the Hawks that over 10 players could be sidelined and Atlanta could still run out Trae Young, Clint Capela, and Cam Reddish.
Two years ago when Atlanta got aggressive with offseason additions they did it with the knowledge they had a trio of youngsters they hoped would grow and become part of the core (Reddish, Kevin Huerter, DeAndre Hunter).
Huerter broke through first while injury setbacks halted the other two (Hunter is out again with a wrist injury) but in recent weeks Reddish is showing why the Hawks invested in his potential. Sure, the inconsistency is ever-present with his last two games offering the perfect example.
Versus the Knicks, he shot 4 of 15 for 10 points and 12.5% (1 of 8) from deep but against the Bulls, he scored 33 points on 11 of 23 and 8 of 13 from deep (61.5%) with the onus on the fact he can switch and defend one through four.
12 Hawks are out due to health and safety protocols – – John Collins, Lou Williams, Danilo Gallinari, Delon Wright, Wes Iwundu, Kevin Huerter, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Onyeka Okongwu, Gorgui Dieng Sharife Cooper, and Jalen Johnson.
DeAndre Hunter (wrist) is out indefinitely while Solomon Hill (hamstring) is out for the season.
Chicago Bulls
Although the Bulls got hammered by the virus they did benefit from the timing of when the league upgraded to allow for larger rosters. That meant they avoided playing a game with as many or more hardship deal signees as varsity players.
Instead, they’ll make up postponed games later this season. To be fair, having to be without any of your core is far from ideal but now they’ll have the control in the makeup games on if they want to rest players instead of being forced to play reserves and newcomers.
On Monday, the Bulls’ big three pulled ahead in the second quarter and sailed to an easy victory. DeMar DeRozan (35 points, 10 assists) and Nikola Vucevic (24 points 17 rebounds) each offered double-doubles while Zach LaVine scored 30 points adding nine assists.
Chicago isn’t fully out of the protocol woods yet with head coach Billy Donovan among those in quarantine plus Lonzo Ball, Tony Bradley, Alfonzo McKinnie, and Ersan Ilyasova who are all out Wednesday.
Alex Caruso and Derrick Jones Jr. are both sidelined by hamstring strains while Patrick Williams (thumb) is lost for the season.

Frequently home and home series end up with a split but the situation is set up for Chicago to sweep with a healthier, rested squad and a Hawks team who haven’t won on their home court since they beat the Thunder on November 22nd.
