NASCAR Handicapping
The NASCAR Cup Series heads east to New York this weekend and iconic Watkins Glen International for the 12th points-scoring race of the 2026 season, and the second road course event of the year.
Road course racing changes the entire betting board compared to intermediate tracks and superspeedways. Driver skill matters more, braking zones become critical, and mistakes usually carry bigger consequences.
That format naturally puts a spotlight on Trackhouse Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen.
The Australian dominated road course races last season, winning five times during his first full-time NASCAR Cup Series campaign.
Road Course Betting Strategy & NASCAR Edge
Watkins Glen rewards drivers who stay aggressive without overdriving the corners.
Unlike oval racing, road course betting leans heavily on braking consistency, track position, and how well a driver manages restarts through technical sections. That’s why experienced road racers usually separate themselves over a long green-flag run.
Passing also becomes more difficult once the field spreads out, so qualifying and pit strategy carry extra weight this week.
Why Watkins Glen Creates Betting Value
Road course races almost always create sharper betting opportunities.
Casual bettors tend to chase overall standings and season-long speed, but certain drivers simply perform better once the series shifts to road racing. Watkins Glen especially rewards drivers with patience, clean entry speed, and confidence attacking braking zones late in the race.
That’s why road course specialists consistently outperform their number here.
Last Year
This race became another chapter in Shane van Gisbergen’s complete road course dominance last season.
The victory marked his fourth road course win of 2025, and his second victory of more than 10 seconds over the field. He was also the runner-up here in 2024 before breaking through with the win last season.
Van Gisbergen led a race-best 38 of 90 laps, including the final 17 around Watkins Glen International. The No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet crossed the finish line 11.116 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell.
How SVG Took Control Late
Van Gisbergen entered NASCAR with a championship pedigree already established in the Australian Supercars Series.
His win at Watkins Glen tied him with Dan Gurney as the only drivers to secure their first five NASCAR Cup Series victories on road courses.
The timing was perfect as well, with Trackhouse Racing announcing a multi-year contract extension during the same weekend.
2025 became SVG’s first full-time Cup Series season, and this win followed earlier victories at Mexico City, Chicago, and Sonoma. He would eventually add another road course victory later in the season at Charlotte.
Christopher Bell passed Chris Buescher on the final lap to finish second, while Buescher settled for third after winning this race in 2024.
William Byron entered the race leading the regular season standings and finished fourth. Chase Briscoe completed the top five after making a final-lap pass on Ryan Blaney.
Kyle Larson’s day ended early after a Lap 6 spin caused by brake issues entering the first turn. The problem forced Larson to the garage for repairs, and he eventually finished last in the 39-car field.

Go Bowling at The Glen Free Picks
2026 NASCAR Go Bowling at The Glen Race Odds: Shane van Gisbergen -105
The only thing that can really hold back SVG on road courses right now is bad luck or mechanical issues.
Since the start of 2025, he owns an absurd 1.9 average finish on road courses with five victories during that stretch.
Our 2026 NASCAR Go Bowling at The Glen Free Pick is riding with one of the front-runners because sometimes chalk really is the sharp move.
2026 NASCAR Go Bowling at The Glen Race Odds: Tyler Reddick +625
Reddick already owns four career road course victories and won earlier this season at COTA.
His combination of speed, aggression, and tire management always makes him dangerous at tracks like Watkins Glen.
Top-10s and matchup bets also become strong angles this week because of how reliable his road course form has been.
2026 NASCAR Go Bowling at The Glen Race Odds: Christopher Bell +1100
Bell is already a three-time road course winner and continues producing consistent finishes at Watkins Glen.
He finished runner-up to SVG here last season and still profiles as one of the cleanest value plays near the top of the board.
NASCAR Odds: Ross Chastain +2000
Chastain has posted consecutive top-10 finishes at Watkins Glen and nearly stole this race back in 2024.
This feels like a realistic bounce-back spot for him.
NASCAR Odds: Bubba Wallace +20000
Wallace quietly continues improving at Watkins Glen.
He finished eighth here last season and owns top-12 finishes in two of the last three races at this track.
Before you bet the house on a big-name favorite, make sure current form and road course history actually support the number.

How to Bet NASCAR Road Courses Like a Sharp Bettor
Road course betting is completely different from betting oval races. Driver talent matters more, track position becomes critical, and mistakes entering braking zones can end a race instantly.
That’s why experienced road racers usually deserve extra respect when the series heads to Watkins Glen.
NASCAR Betting Markets That Actually Matter
Outrights still draw the most attention, but matchup bets and top-10 markets often provide more consistent value. Road course specialists tend to separate themselves over long green-flag runs, especially once pit strategy starts cycling through the field.
Live betting also becomes useful if a fast car qualifies poorly but starts moving through traffic early in the race.
The goal isn’t trying to predict every lap perfectly.
It’s building a card with multiple ways to cash once the race settles in.
